Family engagement and community involvement are extremely important for young children education. Efforts should be taken foster relationship and connection between the public education, community and family.

Families may be differing from one another in terms of ethnicity, race, culture, language, economic status, religion and so on. It is crucial for educators to celebrate the diversity in class and provide inclusive environment in which the children and their family can feel a sense of belonging despite their family background and status. Thus, daily communications which is respectful, two-way and objective should be built in between the educators and the families. By doing so, an effective partnership that built on trust could be formed.

Other than family diversity, family strengths and parental roles in different family systems should be recognized to improve the children’s learning in class. Moreover, this understanding of children family background and active involvement of parents can encourage learning at home to further enhance the children learning experience. However, the problems for young parents in the transition to parenthood, new sibling relationships formed when the family expand, conflict in between work and family may result in family stress and the parents’ engagement in young children education.

Educators should actively relate these diversities to Developmentally Appropriate Practice as well as the programs for children with special needs. Other than that, NAEYC Accreditation Guidelines should be taken in consideration too.

In short, families, communities and schools should work together to create and maintain a relationship that can ensure the children benefits in the young children education.

References

Couchenour, D., & Chrisman, K.
