The maneuver took five seconds.”

Explanation: Ron Jones found a way to instruct and model discipline in the classroom effectively and efficiently while also simulating the discipline within Nazi Germany as a classroom History lesson. It's now just a dream, something to remember, no it's something we tried to forget. That's how it all started. By strange coincidence I think it was Steve who started the Third Wave with a question. We were studying Nazi Germany and in the middle of a lecture I was interrupted by the question. How could the German populace claim ignorance of the slaughter of the Jewish people. How could the townspeople, railroad conductors, teachers, doctors, claim they knew nothing about concentration camps and human carnage.”

Evidence:Ron Jones had been reminded of the terrifying event that occurred when he taught Steve and his peers the lesson of how the Germans were so easily swayed into believing absurd ideas during WWII. It’s importance is that The Third Wave wasn’t just something of the past,it was a warning in the future for others.

They even seemed to be asking better questions and treating each other with more compassion. How could this be? Here I was enacting an authoritarian learning environment and it seemed very productive. I now began to ponder not just how far this class could be pushed but how such I would change my basic beliefs toward an open classroom and self directed learning. Was all my belief in Carl Rogers to shrivel and die? Where was this experiment leading?

Explanation: As Ron Jones is testing his theory of control, the students are starting to follow along more and more, even showing more of an interest in the classroom. So Mr. Jones is proving himself correct because his class was following under a leadership like the Nazis in Germany.

I called it the Third Wave salute because the hand resembled a wave about to top over. The idea for the three came from beach lore that waves travel in chains, the third wave being the last and largest of each series. Since we had a salute I made it a rule to salute all class members outside the classroom."

Explanation: The Third Wave could have a connection to the Third Reich, created by Hitler in 1933. I believe that is another reason why the narrator called it the Third Wave. The narrator could have put in, "a wave about to top over," (the wave being the Reich) meant that the Third Reich would fail. The salute means that the class has to work and be together as a community. The quote, “Since we had a salute I made it a rule to salute all class members outside the classroom,” means that Mr. Jones wants to teach his students how to be a community and what it was like being under Nazi control and be in the army. Many other students outside of the class asked to join when they saw students in the class saluting each other outside of class. The students that were not in the class thought that it was cool and fun to salute others.

You would be walking down the hall when all of a sudden three classmates would turn your way each flashing a quick salute. Although he taught a U.S. history class, Mr. Jones still did the salute to show how fast it can to do one thing.

It was also the genesis of a secret that i and two hundred students would sadly share for the rest of our lives.”

I think this quote is weird because normally students and teachers don’t have a secrets. This could mean they were doing something wrong. this shows that not only a few people were involved. This secret was a bad secret because he uses the word sadly to describe it.This secret scared them for life and will be with them for awhile.
