Julie Knuteson - 3 things I learned

One thing I learned was there are two types of mindsets: fixed mindset and a growth mindset. a fixed mindset believes that you have intelligence and you can't improve that level of understanding. A growth mindset believes you may not be able to do something yet, but the journey of learning is more important than having natural intelligence.

More specifically, I also learned how my role as an educator can help impact a student's growth mindset by the things I say to students. I need to make sure I am focusing on the process and efforts of my students. Often times we fall into the pattern of assessments and reporting that to parents. Assessments are important, but we also need to recognize the growth and challenges students face as stepping stones for growth.

Lastly, I learned how to understand and implement the growth mindset as a parent for my two children.

I would love to know if there are activities that can be used to help students learn about the different mindsets, at a younger elementary level.

Also, I would like to learn how to support students online with strengthening their growth mindset. When students are expected to complete most of their education independently after watching a learning video, I have parents who are voicing concern that their child says they "can't" do the work and they have a fixed mindset. How can I support families appropriately while still delivering content remotely.

After watching the Ted Talk, I really like the idea of "not yet". I try to stay positive with my students but I was looking for something to say to my athletes to help build that thought that it is not failure, just a snapshot of where you are at right now. I like the "not yet" wording.

The second would be that to build a better growth mindset, you need to focus on the process and not the overall outcome. This seems like a Duh moment, but it is important to do that when students are coming in the door with so much baggage.

The third is that Growth Mindset starts with me. I need to realize where I am and how I talk or pay attention to "being present". The better I can model growth mindset, the better my students will be at it as well.

The two things I would like to learn more about are:
1: How to connect with students that HATE PE class before I get a chance to make a positive relationship with them. These students are ones that just refuse to participate at any level and their parents will back them.

2. What are some more ways to help colleagues use a growth mindset onto my colleagues?

Today is Mother's Day and as I always do, I had my kids color and write on my wife's "huge" card I got her. It is amazing to see how fast they are growing (7yr and 5yr). They have the biggest hearts in the world. My 7yr old daughter was teaching my 5yr old son how to dance today. They are growing WAY too fast!!!
