The only legal use of heroin is it is used as a painkiller by hospitals if patients are dying. It is effective at relieving pain and if there are patients with a terminal illness they could be given heroin. This is because there is no fear of the patients becoming addicted. There are also drugs similar to heroin that are more commonly used as painkillers.

“The Illegal Drugs with Legal Medical Uses - BBC Newsbeat.” BBC News, BBC, 6 Apr. 2017, www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/39513521/the-illegal-drugs-with-legal-medical-uses.

Heroin was embellished by the media which resulted in a large number of teens using heroin. Many users began their drug use because of the media and its portrayals of heroin. Teens are horribly affected by the heroin that is being illegally sold. While teen heroin users are less likely to commit crimes for the drug than older groups of addicts but over half have still been involved in illegal activities. Many teens have died and have been injured due to the negative effects of heroin.

Micheline Duterte, Kristin Hemphill, Terrence Murphy, and Sheigla Murphy. “Media Glamorization of Heroin Influences Young People.” Heroin, edited by Stuart A.

The first cultivation of opium poppies occurred in the fertile crescent in 4000 B.C. Egyptians found uses for opium in 1552 B.C. After spreading for centuries it was found out that morphine was the most prominent acting agent in opium. Heroin was then created by Alder Wright in 1874. In 1924 its production was outlawed in the U.S. and in 1956 it was outlawed as a whole. It is named a schedule 1 drug and it is still sold illegally today.

Bigelow, Barbara C., editor. “Heroin.” UXL Encyclopedia of Drugs and Addictive Substances, vol. 3, UXL, Detroit, MI, 2006, pp. 399–420. Gale Virtual Reference Library, link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/CX3448100060/GVRL?u=lom_inac&sid=GVRL&xid=11a0632b.
