Watson’s speech captivated me, as I am a woman myself. She spoke about common issues that women and girls share to this day such as being told what our bodies should look like or being afraid to be too involved with sports because our bodies will appear to be too “masculine”.  There is a particular part in the speech (5:15) that was an eye opener for me and actually influenced me to alter my definition of gender inequality. This particular part she speaks about gender inequality from a man’s perspective, personally I’ve never thought about men suffering from gender inequality because whenever I hear the term gender inequality I automatically think about women or feminist fighting for women’s’ rights maybe this happens because I am a girl and I am bias. There is a specific statement she says that I believe should be noted and that is “young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man…in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men”. She also says “men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes and that when they are free things will change as a natural consequence”. What I learnt from this statement is that when you are trying to fix a problem, you have to find the root of the problem. Instead of always protesting for women’s rights, we can first start by being advocates for men letting men know it is okay to feel vulnerable or seek help if you are suffering from mental illness and as Emma Watson said this will intern have a positive effect on women’s rights. This is not by choice but unfortunately due to preference, there were limited resources to learn from in the 1800’s and in this time it was obvious that persons of male sex would be given the opportunity to study. This is because in the past we lived in Androcentric times. It was believed that the men/boys will hunt or be able to attend school and the women/girls will stay home and take care of the family. In society women were seen as incompetent, this is still an issue in the 21st century. Malala Yousafzai is a feminist and an advocate for education rights. Education is very close to her heart as it was taken away from her at the age of eleven now that she is given a second chance to attain her education; she speaks out about the importance and value of education. Her goal is to provide every child with the right to education. She is especially driven to fight for the right of girls who’s right to go to school was taken away because they are girls. During her interview with Emma Watson she says that there are 66,000,000 girls who cannot go to school because of their gender. In the song Marley sings “I remember on the slave ship, how they brutalize the very souls”. Caribbean Civilization has taught me a lot of historical information about gender inequality and slavery. For example women were forced to work as prostitutes and were given to other men as items when the cost of slaves increased. To think women were raped during times of slavery but at the time it was considered to be “ok” because the British had this mentality that they were superior to all the races that aren’t Caucasian. On the plantations women were exploited worse than the men were. Fast forward to the 21st century, slavery has been abolished and yet rape is still happening and women are still treated like objects. Gender equality which consequentially had an effect on slavery stems way back to the Victorian period. During this period theorist Herbert Spencer and Patrick Geddes implanted a belief in society that men are active agents who expends energy and women would conserve their energy. This translates to men are leaders in society and dominate the public sphere (Barriteau, E. 2003). There has been more than 15,000 reports on domestic abuse in the last decade. Based on what I learnt from Caribbean Civilization is, the superiority of men over women has been instilled in society for centuries. Even though now there is a law in place that domestic violence is illegal. This will not stop most men from abusing women because it almost like tradition, this has been a norm for years where men could abuse women and get away with it. It will take a lot of feminist advocates to change the way society thinks about women. Thus domestic violence needs to be stopped not just because it is illegal but men should know women do not deserve to be abused. I recently moved from Canada to Trinidad and besides difference in culture I have noticed a huge difference in terms of my independence. In Canada I was free to roam given that my parents are aware of where I'm going. Unlike in Trinidad because I am a girl I have been limited to my freedom and I honestly feel slightly stripped of my independence. There are reasons for this of course, when going out in Trinidad one has to be extremely aware of their surroundings especially if they are a girl, there  are also prominent bad areas in Trinidad which can be very unsafe for a young girl even if I'm with some friends, it is still dangerous but as everyone will tell me "It is ok to go out once there is a boy with you". I must admit at first I was not too keen about having to do this course because I thought it is a waste of time since it has nothing to do with my program but in actuality I learnt a lot about the Caribbean and having currently moved to Trinidad, I felt a sense of belonging now knowing the history. This course also helped me to better understand the stories my grandparents would tell me about my great grandparents. I learnt about many topics such as Caribbean Identity, Cultural Expression, Gender Equality, Slavery just to name a few. I was specifically excited to learn about Gender Equalities because I am currently facing gender inequality issues. It is very beneficial to know the history of Gender Equalities especially in the Caribbean as I am facing these issues in Trinidad. The concept of revisionism was an eye opener for me as it made me reflect on how far Trinidad and the Caribbean as a whole has come. This also helped me to appreciated Trinidad more for what it offers. Trinidad’s history is unique and admirable. My understanding of Civilization, an evolved state of society to where a time of advancement in social development and organization has been acquired.   
An observation that stood out to me is I learnt and understood the topics in Caribbean civilization a lot more during the tutorials compared to the plenaries, maybe because it was more interactive.
