Focus group: Year 10 (class of 30)

LO: To respond to the effects of pollution - via fast fashion by developing their understanding of textiles.

Overall idea: Pupils undertake visual research, learning about how fast fashion is the second most polluting industry and its impact on the environment. They create banners which include mixed media (primarily fabric). 
Working in small groups, they will plan out and sketch their banners. Then, they will use fabric scraps to create lettering, which will be hand-stitched to their banners. 
The students will end with a practice round of a peaceful protest around the school.

The group have experience working in 2D - design and drawing. However, they have limited experience in mixed media, so they would need considerable support for working with fabric and sewing. Nevertheless, the group find collaborative work to be really engaging and fun. 

This scheme of learning will enable pupils to explore the interface between modern-day fast fashion - which would be highly relevant to KS4 (as they begin to buy their clothes online), pollution and Art + Design.
