If teachers are crunched for time or have a plan for a creative activity that will take up most of class, lecturing can be a brief way to teach students what they need to know without taking up too much time or making the information too complicated, depending on the lecture style.

Lecturing puts a teacher at a disadvantage because the students are made into inactive recipients of knowledge, rather than active participants in the learning process. Because of this, it is easy to lose students' attention. Often times learning during lecture is not deep-rooted because it is not experiential. Another big disadvantage of lecturing is the burden taken on by the teacher. For an entire class, the teacher has to have material prepared to talk about. Although a daily lesson plan is good, an entire class worth solely based on the teacher can be too much pressure.
