Repetition as a musical element is the repeating of certain notes sometimes to establish a beat. When evaluating repetition, it's certainly important in a song because it creates the lasting impact of us remembering the song. Like when a beat in the background of a rap song is memorable we may remember the repeating beat but not the lyrics themselves. I can definitely see validity with how Ratliff said repetition is "A way to make you focus on all that is in fact non repetitive," (Ratliff Chapter 1). It makes his overall argument make sense in that when a beat is constantly repeating, hearing a different beat played in a song is incredibly more noticeable than a song constantly playing new/different beats. When listening to We R Who We R by Kesha, you really understand what Ratliff is talking about. When coming to the main chorus Kesha continually repeats parts of words that are happening in the moment such as their bodies being "nu-nu-nu-numb" but when she proclaims "We know we're superstars, we are who we are." None of that is repeated showing that all of the momentary happenings are adding up to the fact that this group of people isn't controlled by anyone else but rather they are their own independent persons. For my example, I have Through the Wire by Kanye West. This is my example because the background beat is the same throughout the song which makes us focus on what isn't being repeated, the lyrics. The main point of the song being the story of Kanye still recording a song even though he'd gotten in a very recent car accident. With the repeating beat we focus on the lyrics and realize why this song is so impressive given Kanye's jaw being held together only by wire.

"In music there's imagined to be a general split between two orientations: variation and repetition," Ben Ratliff.

""Ain't It Funky Now" (parts 1 and 2), not a particularly famous James Brown song but in my opinion one of the greatest recordings in the world, works like a container for the ideas about repetition and length that he and his band were playing with in 1969," Ben Ratliff.
