Bilingual Dictionaries and/or Glossaries

Students can use bilingual dictionaries and glossaries that provide one-to-one translations but not definitions of words. These are not available for foreign language exams.

English and Alternative Language Editions

Students may not use English and Alternative Language editions for English Language Arts (ELA) examinations.

The NYS Education Department provides written translations for some examinations. Students may use both editions simultaneously.

Oral Translation for Low Incidence Languages

When there is no translated edition of a state test (except for ELA examinations) schools can provide students with a direct, oral translation.

Writing Responses in the Home/Primary Language

Students who are using alternative language editions or oral translations of state tests (not ELA tests) may write their responses to open-ended questions in a language other than English.
