The Civil War was one of the most important wars in USA or if not the most important. It had the bloodiest battle which was the battle of Gettysburg and it advanced the way of Warfare by introducing the ironclads and some new weapons. Illinois was one of the best states in the Civil War it helped the Union for prison camps for the Confederates and also it had training camps for Union soldiers.

Illinois gave many things to Abe Lincoln like the most troops but did you know that one of the most important things that Illinois did in Illinois was with the training camp and Prison for the Confederate Soldiers and spies. Camp Douglas started as a training camp for the troops of Illinois in the Union in the Civil War, since Illinois sent more troops to the Union Army they had to help them train in a Camp so they Constructed Camp Douglas. Over the years almost like the 2 last years of the Civil War Illinois decided to make Camp Douglas a prison Camp for Confederate Soldiers and spies that Ulysses S. Grant captured. By 1864 Camp Douglas had many Confederate prisoners that escaped the Camp, but almost at the late 1864’s people and the government of Illinois noticed. So they made an election and a mass prison break occurred. Camp Douglas had Cons for every 1 prisoner in 7 died, they died because of food supply and sanitation. By the end of the Civil War more than 4,000 prisoners died because of low food supply and sanitation. In conclusion Camp Douglas was one of the most important things that Illinois Contributed to the Civil War and if there was no Prison Camp the Confederates may have won.

Illinois did many things in the Civil War like Camp Douglas and sent 250,000 Union soldiers in to the Civil War the most in the country. Other things like being the birthplace of one of the most important general or the most important Ulysses S. Grant he was the general who led the Union Army into the battle of Vicksburg and the One who surrender the Confederate Army at the end of the Civil War, his time in Illinois and Chicago did impact the way he felt about slaves in the South and that’s why he joined the Union Army and later be the 18th president of the United States. The president during the Civil War Abe Lincoln our 16th president lived most of his life in Illinois affected the way and how he rebelled against the slaves. Illinois also gave most of the clothing and food during the Civil War. That’s why Illinois was one of the most important state in the Civil War.

Imagine if Illinois did not send that much troops to the Union Army, will we be still fighting. Illinois today has a population of 12.74 million and more than half will not be free if Illinois did not contribute to the war like they did. Today sites like Camp Douglas and Ulysses S Grant home are still standing. While the remains of Camp Douglas are there most of it was broken down by the government. Thanks to Illinois tough and all of contribution Ulysses S Grant and Lincoln won the American Civil War. Fun Fact is that Illinois is called the land of Lincoln because of the decision Lincoln made in his life in Illinois that change the whole United States.

Excellent project that incorporated many statistics/numbers and examples to demonstrate the impact that Illinois had on the Civil War. You used particular examples to support your thesis, excellent! A bit more cause-effect-consequence (how the Civil War began, how Illinois first responded, etc) would strengthen it, but this is great work. Next time find a primary source to support your ideas. Keep up the excellent diligence! I5.5O6C4P6 - 38
