Hello-I’m so grateful to be able to take this class as a self study. I work at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin as a fundraiser, but right now (and the next four weeks) I’m at home in leave with our new son, Mason.

I’m excited for this class because it’s a deeper dive into material that is still new to me. My background is museum education, so when I was in graduate school the focus was much more on informal learning and not so much assessment, instruction, curriculum design. I’m also excited to talk about bias and equity in education. The last year I’ve had field experiences in MPS, and have met amazing students—and what I saw happening in the classroom is not the narrative I often hear on the news, in conversations and so on when MPS is discussed.

Hobbies—running, crafting, and animal rescue.

I’m so looking forward to learning with everyone 😊 I’ve added a picture of me so you can all put a face with a name.

Hello Terisa and Mary! I'm excited to be participating in this Independent Study with Mary, whom I've had several classes with prior to this one (she's the best to talk to whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed). Thankfully I'm familiar with everyone already! :) I'm currently working at Apple Ridge Academy in Brookfield. I am a lead/co- teacher in a toddler classroom. I work with 18-24 month little ones who always keep me on my toes. In my spare time I enjoy reading a range of different types of books. I just recently bought The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor that I'm eager to dive into. I also enjoy being outdoors. Being able to go on walks and hikes is a great stress relief for me. Another hobby of mine that recently changed was being able to hangout with my pets at home. I unfortunately had to put down my pet hedgehog (named Henry) back in April and despite a long battle with different health issues I also had to put down my cat (named Stormie) just yesterday. I am very passionate about animals. <3 My hopes for this course are to build on my previous work done in this class over the summer. I also hope to mold my teaching style and use these topics and discussions to better prepare myself to be the best teacher I can be.

Hi there! Watching the Verna Meyers piece has been amazing. It reminded me of a group I am in, Professional Dimensions. I am not sure if you are familiar with this group, but it's a women's networking group in Milwaukee. We have one of the most diverse boards in the city (over 33% women of color, and a big range of age and sexual orientations). We have an annual Ideation Summit on Inclusion and Equity, as well as "conversation circles." Conversation Circles are diverse groups of women who meet for six weeks and discuss race relations in the city of Milwaukee, and how we as individuals can make a difference. This includes unlearning bias. I learned where some of my biases lie and although it is hard to admit, I own up to them so I can LEARN. :) If either of you are ever interested in joining a conversation circle or our annual summit, please let me know or check out our website: https://professionaldimensions.org/Race-Relations-Initiative

-Maybe separate your first essential questions into two:

What does it mean to be a woman or man in today's America?

	How has that changed?

-Love what you chose for transferrable skills

-Description of course units is wordy

-One piece of advice Terisa gave us during the summer was to watch our commas!

-Consider revising big idea for unit I- "Our sex is determined at birth but our gender is created by society. The goal of this unit is to understand the relationship between gender and socialization as well as the relevance to your life."

-For vocabulary maybe keep socialization and social construction as two separate vocab ideas

-I believe discussing toxic masculinity with young adults/adolescents should be done so with caution. The topic could potentially cause tension and a divide in the class

-I love the assessment of writing your life as though you were born a different gender!!! How creative!!!!

-I really enjoy what you've created! I think it lets the students look deeper into themselves as well as their role in society. So much growth could come from this!!

This is so important so you can make sure all students are included. You are going to be such a great teacher :)

-I see you have questions for the students which are all great, I'm wondering if you have questions for more than just two of the seasons?

-I also wonder if you will go back to talk about and celebrate the change in seasons during the academic year?

-I think your lesson was outstanding, and I believe your students will learn a lot and be lucky to have you!
