Masa totală a <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%83m%C3%A2nt">Pământului</a>, a tuturor celorlalte <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet%C4%83">planete</a>, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid">asteroizi</a>, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteoroid">meteoroizi</a>, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet%C4%83">comete</a> precum și a <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praf">prafului</a> interplanetar care <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbit%C4%83_(astronomie)">orbitează</a>în jurul Soarelui, reprezintă abia 0,14% din masa întregului Sistem Solar, în timp ce <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mas%C4%83_solar%C4%83">masa Soarelui</a> reprezintă 99,86%. <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energie">Energia</a> provenită de la Soare (sub forma <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumin%C4%83">luminii</a>, căldurii ș.a.) face posibilă întreaga <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via%C8%9B%C4%83">viață</a> de pe Pământ, de exemplu prin <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotosintez%C4%83">fotosinteză</a>, iar prin intermediul <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C4%83ldur%C4%83">căldurii</a> și <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clim%C4%83">clima</a> favorabilă.<br>În cadrul discuțiilor dintre cercetători, Soarele este desemnat uneori și prin numele său <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limba_latin%C4%83">latin</a> <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol"><em>Sol</em></a>, sau <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limba_greac%C4%83">grecesc</a> <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helios"><em>Helios</em></a>. <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simbol_astronomic">Simbolul</a> său <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomie">astronomic</a> este un cerc cu un punct în centru.&nbsp; Unele popoare din Antichitate îl considerau ca fiind o <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet%C4%83">planetă</a>.<strong><br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidrogen"><br>Hidrogenul</a> reprezintă aproximativ 74% din masa Soarelui, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliu">heliul</a> 25%, iar restul este constituit din cantități mici de <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Element_chimic">elemente</a> mai grele. Datorită acestei compoziții și a temperaturilor ridicate, pe Soare nu există o crustă (scoarță) solidă, și nici materie în stare lichidă, toată materia solară fiind în întregime în stare de plasmă și gazoasă.<br><br></div><div><br>Soarele face parte din <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clasificarea_stelelor">clasa spectrală</a> G2V. "G2" înseamnă că:<br><br></div><ul><li>temperatura la suprafață este de aproximativ 5778 K (5505 <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C2%B0C">°C</a>, 9941 °F);</li><li>iar spectrul său conține <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linie_spectral%C4%83">linii</a> de metale ionizate și neutre precum și foarte slabe linii de hidrogen.</li></ul><div><br>Sufixul "V" (citit <strong>5</strong>) indică apartenența Soarelui la grupul majoritar al stelelor aflate în secvența principală. Aceasta înseamnă că își generează energia prin <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuziune_nuclear%C4%83">fuziunea nucleară</a> a nucleelor de <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidrogen">hidrogen</a> în <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliu">heliu</a>, și că se află în <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echilibru_hidrostatic">echilibru hidrostatic</a>, adică nici nu se contractă nici nu se dilată. Numai în galaxia noatră sunt mai mult de 100 de milioane de stele din clasa G2. Datorită distribuției logaritmice a mărimii stelelor, Soarele este de fapt mai strălucitor decât 85% din stelele galaxiei, majoritatea acestora fiind <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitic%C4%83_ro%C8%99ie">pitice roșii</a>.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lumina orbitoare a Soarelui provine de la un înveliș de grosime mai mică de 300 km, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotosfer%C4%83">fotosfera</a>. Aceasta este cea care dă impresia că Soarele are o margine bine delimitată. Temperatura fotosferei este de aprox. 5.780 <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelvin">Kelvin</a>. Văzută prin telescop, ea se prezintă ca o rețea de celule mici sau granule strălucitoare, aflate într-o permanentă agitație. Fiecare granulă este o bulă de gaz de mărimea unei țări ca Franța. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Ea apare, se transformă și dispare în aproximativ 10 minute. Pe alocuri, suprafața Soarelui prezintă pete întunecate, numite pete solare, care au fost foarte mult cercetate dupa inventarea <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunet%C4%83">lunetei</a> și a <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescop">telescopului</a>. Urmărindu-le zi de zi, observăm că ele nu ramân în același loc. Această deplasare dovedește că Soarele se învârtește în jurul propriei sale axe. În timpul unei eclipse totale, când discul orbitor al Soarelui dispare, uneori chiar total, în spatele Lunii pentru câteva ore, remarcăm în jurul Soarelui o bordură subțire, de un roșu aprins, cromosfera, iar dincolo de aceasta, un halo argintiu, mai mult sau mai puțin neregulat, coroana.</div>]]></description>

Ele formează așa-numita <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosfer%C4%83_solar%C4%83">atmosferă solară</a>. În mod obișnuit nu le vedem, pentru că sunt mult mai puțin luminoase decât fotosfera. Cromosfera se ridică până la 5.000 km de suprafața Soarelui. Ea este acoperită de mici jeturi dinamice de gaz foarte cald, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spicule_solare">spiculii</a> (sau spicule). Temperatura ei crește o dată cu altitudinea: în vârf, ea atinge 20.000 °C. Coroana, care îmbracă atmosfera, se diluează treptat în spațiu și nu are o limită exterioară bine definită. Ea este foarte rarefiată, dar extrem de caldă: temperatura sa depașește 1 milion de grade.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Spre <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nucleul_solar">centrul Soarelui</a> este din ce în ce mai cald, iar materia este din ce în ce mai comprimată. În centru temperatura ajunge la 15 milioane de grade, iar presiunea este de 100 milioane de ori mai mare decat cea din centrul Pământului. În acest cuptor, atomii de hidrogen se aglomerează câte patru și se transformă în atomi de heliu. În cadrul acestei reacții de fuziune nucleară se degajă căldură și lumină, sursa strălucirii Soarelui. În fiecare secundă, 564 de milioane de tone de hidrogen se transformă în aproape 560 de milioane de tone de heliu în centrul Soarelui, iar diferența, mai mult de 4 milioane de tone pe secundă, se transformă în energie radiativă (în jur de 383 yotawatt, adică 3,83 x 10<sup>26</sup> Watt).&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

Fiind mai ușor accesibile observațiilor directe, petele au fost primele fenomene descoperite (<a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei">Galileo Galilei</a> în <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/1610">1610</a>). Toate celelalte fenomene solare au fost descoperite în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea și în prima jumătate a secolului al XX-lea. Legitățile activității solare au fost stabilite ca urmare a îndelungatelor observații și statistici asupra petelor solare și asupra celorlalte fenomene solare.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>În timpul unei erupții solare o cantitate enormă de energie care se află în cromosferă și coroană este eliberată dintr-o dată. Materia este proiectată în coroană și particule de atomi accelerate până la viteze foarte mari sunt expulzate în spațiul interplanetar. Aceste fenomene sunt însoțite de o emisie de raze X (Röntgen), de unde radio și, în cazul erupțiilor mai puternice, de lumină vizibilă. Când ajung în apropierea Pământului și intră în atmosferă, în special deasupra regiunii polului nord, particulele creează aurorele polare. De asemenea, ele perturbă propagarea undelor radio în jurul globului. Uneori ele duc și la defectarea rețelelor de distribuire a electricității.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cu timpul, pe măsură ce instrumentele astronomice s-au perfecționat, oamenii au putut observa mai amănunțit toate perturbațiile Soarelui: <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat%C4%83_solar%C4%83">petele solare</a> ale fotosferei; erupțiile solare, <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protuberan%C8%9B%C4%83_solar%C4%83">protuberanțele</a> și filamentele cromosferei; <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jet_de_gaze&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1">jeturile de gaze</a> ale coroanei. Astăzi se știe că aceste fenomene sunt în strânsă legătură unele cu altele. Frecvența și intensitatea lor variază cu o perioadă de aprox. 11 ani. În timpul acestei perioade numărul petelor solare înregistrează un <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_solar">minimum</a> și un <a href="https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_solar">maximum</a>. Următorul număr maxim este prevăzut în jurul anului 2011. Activitatea solară a rămas suficient de învăluită în mister, dar se știe că aceasta este legată de magnetism și de rotația Soarelui.</div>]]></description>

Restul de UV neblocate care ajung până la suprafața Pământului pot provoca arsuri grave de piele, cataracte și chiar cancer.</li><li>Soarele are culoarea alb-argintie.
