Supporting Student Success while Supporting Each Other. by Steven Calzada

With the semester ending next week, I'm sure many of us are looking at the grades in our grade books and seeing more F's than we are used to seeing and thinking to ourselves, "I did this, this, and this. I tried this, this, and this. If only (fill in the blank)." It is clear that each of you have worked hard this year and are trying to engage your students in every possible way!

Some of you may have thought of creative ways to help your students bump their fail up while maintaining the integrity of the grade. Some of you may need ideas (that is why this department is the best—you always support each other!).

To share these ideas or to get help, please post them here on this Padlet. If there are any other topics you feel we should explore as we go into the 2nd Semester, please post these here as well. The sooner the post, the better since the 19th is just around the corner!

Thank you very much for your help,
Jerome and Steven

Possibly one way to help this is if the student knows how to do the topic in question (say solve a one step equation) but they haven't turned in all the worksheets/mini assignments for that topic, then maybe let them take a 5ish question quiz on the topic and if they get 100% (or whatever criteria you have) they will get full credit for all the missing assignments from that category. -Corey

Algebra 1 is a series of processes. Students must learn to analyze the problem, choose the correct process, and implement the process. So instead of focusing on tests, I have been focusing on homework (the processes). Homework must be completely correct for credit. Only 5 quizzes this semester, right out of the homework. It seems to work AND seems to lower the anxiety level over quizzes.

I've just been letting them do any work from the entire semester for full credit. They email me when they want their grade updated.

Also, I know biology is doing a project to raise semester 1 D/F grades toaa C during semester 2. So that could be something to think about, but would be incredibly difficult to pull off.

I allow test retakes, and students are pretty good about doing these if they earn a low grade (they first complete a reflection form that I've made to complete corrections, which I approve, before taking it a second time). For quizzes, I repost the quiz on Classroom to redo for partial credit back. I also allow late work until the end of the unit, but for 80% credit on DeltaMath, so they're incentivized to stay on top of it each week. Extra credit Hour of Code opportunities for each unit, which supports critical thinking; the kids seem to really like these. Saturday School has been pretty popular, since I allow students to makeup work from past units, or complete "exclusive" extra credit opportunities only open on Saturdays. And I have a rubric for grading participation in the live classes each day, to give credit for actively engaging.
