Middle English (c. 1150-1500)

Middle English, used in England from around the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 until about 1500, was a period characterized by linguistic variation. It marked the transition from the inflected Old English to a language more reliant on word order for conveying grammatical relationships. Middle English pronunciation was also different from modern English, with vowel letters having values closer to those typical in modern continental European languages. The period was framed at its beginning by the after-effects of the Norman Conquest and at its end by the arrival of printing in Britain and important social and linguistic developments. Middle English saw the gradual formation of literary dialects, the rise of the London dialect, and the borrowing of a large number of Anglo-Norman words, among other linguistic changes.

Modern English (ME) or New English (NE) is the form of the English language that has been spoken since the Great Vowel Shift in England, which began in the late 14th century and was completed by the 17th century. With some differences in vocabulary, texts which date from the early 17th century, such as the works of William Shakespeare and the King James Bible, are considered Modern English texts, or more specifically, they are referred to as texts which were written in Early Modern English or they are referred to as texts which were written in Elizabethan English.
