We still had to do it many times until we finished the trials, and after that, the water was nearly perfect. However, it still didn't work very well because the paper towels had a bit of big holes that the salt might have went through, and there was less water everytime we filtered the water. Our group thinks that we should have used the coffee filter because the coffee filter has smaller holes than paper towels, and it would be more suitable for the salt since the holes are smaller. The cotton balls worked because the cotton sucked in most of the water so it was less water to change. My filter didn't work because the coffee filter didn't do anything it just sucked in the water just like the cotton balls did. However it might have worked with cheesecloth because the color might get stuck in the little holes making the water more clear. The cheesecloth really helped because of the tiny holes, we overlapped the holes to make them even smaller.  The small holes did not let the activated charcoal through but let some of the salt in. They sorta' worked because when we observed the water with the food coloring before we poured it it was dark blue but when we poured the water with the food coloring in the cotton balls sucked in all of the water and left the food coloring to go through when it didn't have as much as it did when we started so the water got darker blue. Another thing that didn't work was the paper towel, the paper towel when we poured it sucked all of the water up so the paper towel got top heavy and the water started dripping off the paper towel. I think it worked very well. My group first put water in the cup then we put our contaminant(salt) in the cup than we put our first filter layer(paper towel) and placed it on top of our coke bottle. We then took our second filter layer(activated charcoal) and then poured the water and the contaminant through. The paper towel and the activated charcoal captured the salt and took away the contaminant.
