For example, women face violent attacks and police brutality. Women also face insecurities and unfair persecution. The gov't fails to provide adequate protection and hold perpetrators accountable in most cases. Police pressure and abuse compelled thousands of Afghans living in Pakistan to leave.

According to a survey led by The Guardian,  the majority of men living in the Middle East think that a woman's place is in the home. The Guardian also said that the majority of men think that women are not fit to be leaders, shouldn't work outside the home, and that it's more important to educate boys then girls. They also stated that the police can be viewed as corrupt, violent and abusive. When she wakes up there is a group of men surrounding her, and nobody steps up to help her. She asks people to help her, without realizing that her legs are mangled. In Pakistan as well, the two women can't do much of anything, without a man in the family. Much like in the book, in Pakistan today, women can't do much of anything without a man in the family.
