- clean our houses a day or two before Christmas in order to enable new fresh beginnings
- plant grains of wheat to grow until Christmas. The growth of a grain into a wheat is a symbol of life’s force 
- prepare special dishes as Potica and Christmas bread
- spend time with family
- go to midnight mass on Christmas eve
-  we tend to go for a walk around nature on the Christmas day

People in Slovakia prepare for Christmas long before it comes => they clean and tidy up their house, clean windows, they bake cakes and buy Christmas presents for friends and family. At home they decorate a Christmas tree with Christmas decorations and lights. People usually buy a fish and some of them have it at home in the bath. In Slovakia, we celebrate Christmas on 24.12. – the family get together and has the Christmas dinner together – we eat soup, fish, potatoes, cakes… After the dinner, the family goes to unwrap their Christmas presents and after that they usually watch TV or go to visit friends or their family grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins…
 
 People celebrate Christmas because it is a Christian holiday – we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ who was born in Bethlehem. There are Christian Turks who welcomes like other European countries. 
Also city is prepared for new year: streets and malls decorated with trees, shiny materials, that looks so lovely. People garnish their house who wants. We have public holiday only for a day, 1st of January. Some people give gifts each other. Christmas means remembering  good memories and forgetting all badness for me.

Christmas celebrations really start on 5th January which is called 'Kolede'. On this day people, especially children, like to go carols singing around their neighbors. They are given fruits, nuts and coins. At the end of the night a special Christmas bread which has a coin baked in it is passed around. Everyone takes a piece and if you find the coin you'll get luck for the next year (and you might also have to host the bonfire the next year!).On Christmas Day (7th January) most Christians go to a Church service and then come home to eat a large Christmas feast! The traditional Christmas Day greeting is "Hristos se rodi" or "Христос се роди!" What you need to tie a Christmas wreath:

fir branches
straw weath
floral wire
candles
candlestick
dekoration
hot glue
ribbons

Cut fir branches into small pieces so that you can work with them.
Lay 2 or 3 pieces of fir branches onto a straw weath, hold it and fix them with a floral wire. Also fix some fir branches to the sides of the wreath. For decoration you normally use four candles for the 4 Sundays of Advent. You can also use branches of berry bushes or some decoration stars. It´s your choice how you want it to look like. But the most important thing - Have fun!

Every family has a own tradition, from nativity plays to Christmas mass. The presents take place in the evening after meal. While the “Christkind” (Santa Claus) comes, the living room door is locked.
A ringing bell gives the children the sing that it was there and brought the presents.
