Motivation - It is in my nature to spend time reflecting on what I do and the things that I have encountered daily. But nowadays, I tend to do less. This is mainly because of a lack of time, energy and support. Many years ago when I was a Love class teacher, my TA and I would have "debrief sessions" over lunch at least 3 to 4 times a week (Then we had more time and the freedom to customise our lessons according to the needs of the students). My TA and I had similar desires and goals - to educate and bring out the best in our students. We did not mind putting in extra time to evaluate and analyse lessons, students' academic progress, reasons for meltdown & tantrums, etc. We had time to think of creative ideas and sourced for more work materials to engage our students. We even came back to school voluntarily during school holidays to discuss and plan... e.g. SOW, making teaching resources, develop behaviour management strategies, etc. We really loved and enjoyed our work. It was more than a meal ticket.
The school needs to slow down the work pace and let the staff have more time to rest and reflect on their own performance, rate their own work honestly and think of how they can improve or do better.

1. Reflective practice is thinking back about what has happened, what I have done, why things happen that way, what I can do to improve, what better ways to do things in future. It is also learning from what I have experienced, analyzing the process and how to do things better or to avoid the same mistakes. 2. It increases awareness of oneself, awareness of others and awareness of the environment as well as one's critical thinking. Important for building good working relationships which is crucial. Also important for the improvement of oneself and learning from others. 3. Barriers - motivation, the excuse of no time

What, why, so what does it mean?, what's next? without putting labels, we are unconsciously reflecting on our experiences. Firstly, we do not want to make the same mistakes (if they are any), or we want to recreate the same positive experiences the next time.(even if the context is changed).

1. Reflective practice is when there is time and space given to think within yourself of what you have done, buzz with others constructively, and gain an insight or learning that can be applied for the future, work and profession related. When done enough, it can be second nature at work where we don't just go through the motion and do things for the sake of doing things, but at each point our minds are trained to work reflectively and thus value-add.

2. You can provide an input that is uniquely you, and a perspective that others may not see. You become more competent in your work and value-add to the profession. Your mind also becomes sharper and more trained to think, and get deeper insights into issues, not just at surface level.

3. I think the difficulty is in applying what we have reflected into future situations. Sometimes it's easy to think and reflect, but its difficult to remember those reflections in everyday lives and in the busyness of work and also apply them in future.

In your own words, what is reflective practice?

Knowing that I would easily catch cold for being wet in a rain has prompted me to bring along an umbrella each time I leave home. This simple analogy reflects why I have done what I have done. It is closely linked to my personal experience. It is the result of a prior negative experience that has led me to do things differently. Positive experience, on the other hand, would obviously lead me to repeat my success which inevitably lead me to do the same good things I have done. This is reflective practice.

What is the value of using reflection practice, both personally and professionally?

Reflective practice allows us to look at both sides of the coin objectively. It helps us to look at both our negative and positive experiences more openly. It helps us to make an informed decision. The better the quality of the reflective practice the better the outcome would be. In short, reflective practice influences our ultimate decision, both personally and professionally.

What do you feel is your barrier to reflection? What are some ways you can overcome it?

Reflective practice takes time to ‘bloom’. It has to be consciously practised to to reap the rewards associated with it. The more you practise it the better you become with it. But, like most of us, we complain of time, that is, the lack of time.

We also need help. We need help on how to start our reflective practice and how to sustain it. We need help to help us decide the optimal time to reflect, where to reflect as well as some questions we need to ask during the reflection.

A barrier is definitely staying motivated in developing a reflective mind rather than a lazy mind. Sometimes I do feel very tired and just want to space out instead of think!
