The name "bell hooks" was inspired by his maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. The small letter is intended to focus on the content of your writing and not on your person. Their goal, however, is not to be stuck with a particular identity but to be in permanent motion. Hooks published more than thirty books and numerous academic articles, appeared in several films and documentaries, and participated in several public lectures. His work focuses mainly on the intersectionality of race, capitalism and gender, and what hooks describes as their ability to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and class domination. Hooks has a post-modern perspective and is influenced by Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy.

I remember that when I read this narrative it really touched me because it was very real and she expresses herself amazingly, showing her pain and her constant battles. The theme “justice” is explored a lot, especially the lack of it towards black people throughout history. It also generates a debate about incarceration and the inhuman circumstances that prisoners are put through, which shows how flawed the system is. This documentary is very informative and I recommend it a lot to people that are actually concern about studying and understanding history and topics related to the movement Black Lives Matter.

It's so interesting that, despite the director isn't a black person, there are many actors that are extremely relevant in the trama, like Viola Davis, Alfie Enoch, Aja Naomi King, Rome Flynn, Billy Brown, Amirah Vann and many others. In addition, they have a more important position than white actors, because the history involves and depend of them. I think it's important to remember that lawyer is profession which have a regular pattern of profiles and a lot of prejudice with black people and even more with black woman. The serie shows another vision that's essential to get more visibility and inspiration for who want to be a lawyer.

After that, Luís started to fight for many other slavers’ freedom and rights. He has legally freed in the courts over 500 black people who have been victims of the traffic. Although he died before the end of slavery, he left a bunch of juridical articles on the rights of the blacks as individuals as well as poems and quotes, which can be reach out in the book: “Com a palavra, Luís Gama”.

After a while, he started to win customers and specialize his cutting skills. "I didn't want to be an ordinary barber, I wanted to be a successful barber," Ariel Barbeiro used to say.
Ariel realized his clients needed a more resistant, but still sophisticated, hairstyle. For this reason, he developed the "armored cut", which was a hit on social medias and a success among his clients and followers.
Today he provides training courses and workshops in several countries. In his barber shop, he has an app for scheduling appointments and usually has a full schedule. The story of a former black convict who fought against his unfortunate conditions to become a successful entrepreneur is almost as impressive as his own invention. The hairstyle became his masterpiece.

The anti-racist struggle and initiatives like the Black Lives Matter, the economic crisis and the growing conservative movement in the country motivated by the election of Donald Trump and his extremely problematic lines and attitudes are some of the themes that this album brings out. In the track “Yah.” he even samples a speech from one of Fox News’s top commentators, Geraldo Rivera, where he says that “hip-hop caused more damages for the black teenagers than the racism in the United States”. As a way of recognizing the excellent work done by the rapper, he received the Pulitzer Award, one of the most important awards for the journalism and arts in the world. I believe everyone should listen this songs, because they’re a great way to learn and reflect about all the unfair treatments, white privilege and police brutality. Although we’ll never understand how it feels, it’s past time for us the re-educate ourselves and become the best and most active allies we can be.

The author gives us the main ideas and topics spoken and studied by intellectuals and activists like Angela Davis, Bell Hooks, Alice Walker and Audre Lorde. It also contemplates theories like the Afrocentric philosophy, the feminist theory and the Marxist thought. The most important thing for me about this book is the simple and didactic dialogue that the author establishes so that the reader understands not only all the forms of oppression that black women are subjected to, but also how they developed the knowledge and strategies to face them. This movement was in 1990 and still is very excluding, and it’s caused by the lack of empathy and intersectionality from the feminists themselves. It’s very utopian to believe that feminism contemplates all the women in the same way and we all stand by each other and fight for the same reasons while black women are fighting to achieve rights that white women have already achieved many years ago.

For those who doesn’t know her she’s one of the most relevant feminist theorist, writer, cultural and social critic of all times. This book, specifically, was written with the purpose of being a pocket book. In its foreword, Bell explains that she missed having a small but whole book to give to people who weren’t familiar with the feminist movement. She defines it as a: clear, concise and accessible book that explains what feminism is about, but also encourages people to adopt feminist politics. From my personal experience with it, I’d say it’s a must read to understand Intersections among the oppressions held and financed by the capitalism structure such as gender, race and class. It’s a liberator reading. In conclusion, Hooks was extremely successful on her mission to bring this debate into the non academic walls.

Of course, with some fiction, Jordan Peele put structural racism in a subtle way with small details that show the daily lives of black people. In spite of Get Out was released as a horror movie, Jordan Peele considers the movie like a “social thriller”, that the society is the big villain. Thus, know about Jordan Peele’s production and watch Get Out is a way of valuing black artists and understanding a little more about racism from the perspective of those who suffer it.

What happened was that in the XIX century having a black author was not accepted because of the racism in the society. So in his books Machado’s pictures were changed in a way that he was “whitened” because in the vision of the time his books would sell much more. 
   Until a few years ago most people believed that Machado was a white man. That changed when a College in Zumbi dos Palmares was able to reconstruct his truth facial features and show the world that Machado was black. 
   In my opinion this reconstruction that this College made showed us how racist the Brazilian society was and still is. Because even now people believe that this reconstruction is a lie and don’t believe that a black person in the 19th centuries made these beautiful books.

It continues the narrative of other marvel productions, bringing up the origin of the african superhero. The movie is directed by Ryan Coogler, a black american film director, producer, and screenwriter, and has a perfect main cast with black men and women including Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira. What is so interesting in Black Panther is the enhancement of african cultural elements besides the evident ethnic diversity present on the continent, interconnected with technological advancement and developmental mentality of the fictional country of Wakanda. For this reason, it helps to deconstruct the idea of Africa as an identity unit. Furthermore, we have amazing scenes that shows some female empowerment. To conclude, the movie has a great clip which mentions the period where africans chose to died instead of being taken out from their land to be enslaved.

The film is avaible in Netflix, I recomend it to everyone, because it is very usefull to be educated in such delicate topics.

The only thing the police had that could condemn the kids were some videos of them confessing that they were responsible for the crime. The problem with this evidence was that the boys were forced to say those things after more than 24 hours without food, sleep and no contact with their families. After 14 years, the real rapist confessed the crime because he was caught doing the same thing with another woman. The 5 boys had the charges dropped but they lost almost 15 years of their lives for something they didn't do. Korey, the oldest, had to stay in jail for all those years, while the others had to stay around 4 years arrested, and after, had to face a lot of prejudice for being 🤬 offenders. This miniseries talks a lot about racism in the justice department cause this 5 black kids were falsely accused and didn't have the proper chance to defend themselves.

It starts with happy and calm scenes, and it gets more and more frightening by bringing racism in a completely terrifying and shocking way, making a direct relation with slavery, kidnapping and black people traffick. Even though the story has been made nowadays, it makes us reflect about a time when the scenes present in it would be considered acceptable or even correct, which unfortunately still happens today in so many different countries in the world. This movie is a way to entertain, inform and aware people about very important racial issues, and it also to praise the black art, the brilliant script of one of the best directors nowadays.

It is based on true facts, telling the story about the famous injustice of the Central Park Five. In 1989, a woman was spanked and raped in new york, while she was jogging in central park. Five black young boys were accused and sentenced for the crime, even though the police had no evidence about it. Four of them spent 7 years in jail, and Korey, the oldest, spent 13 years. It shows systemic racism in a very detailed and shocking way. 
The film has a major role when we talk about racism. This show tells a story that happened more than 30 years ago, and it’s sadly still happening everyday in US and all over the world. The police brutality is all over tv everyday, and in the high majority of the cases impacts directly the black people, which is clearly related to slavery and in how the government has its own unbreakable racist system. The minisseries shows very closely the way they (dis)treat, incriminate, beat and disrespect black people, black children. The recent George Floyd case, murdered in cold blood by cops in Minneapolis, is just one example of the situations pictured in “When they see Us”, and this shows how important and powerful is for us to watch more series and movies about systemic racism and support black people’s voice.

In her speech named “Ain’t I a women?” she starts a needed discussion: whilst white women where protesting to work in the public sphere, black women were working for over centuries for whites families. She defiance the feminst movement and urges for recognition. The following part is an emblematic peace of her speech:

She performs at the pride parade, clubs and events.  This year she did a performance in the black lives matter protest organized by the group BLAC (Black LGBTQ+ Activist for Change). 

Miss Shalae loves to impersonate Beyoncé because she is a powerful and independent black woman and an inspiration. Overall, the details are very important, the hair, makeup, costumes have to be perfect and especially the dance moves. Her family supports her but at the beginning her father wasn’t supportive, but now that she’s the best Beyoncé impersonator in the world he understands that it is really important to her and it is a real job.

Esther Nakajjigo was an African woman who from an early age questioned the absurd sexualization of black women.  She was able to change the lives of thousands of women through her hard work for women's health, which made her one of the most influential young leaders in the world for the European Union.  But, unfortunately, she died on American territory on June 16 of that year.  Since then, her family has been fighting in court to get Esther's body to Uganda to perform her funeral with all her rights.  This movement is becoming so difficult that the hashtag #EssieBackHome is being raised on social networks to help the family.  It was undoubtedly an essential leader in guaranteeing the rights of black women.

In 2014 his innocence was proven, 70 years after his death.

Coach Carter's film is a film based on real history.  It was directed by black director Thomas Carter.  The coach's role was played by actor Samuel Jackson.  The film depicts the story of a man who was asked to coach a basketball team at a public school in a poor neighborhood in the city of Richmond, a neighborhood frequented mainly by blacks.  Soon the athletes on the team surprised the coach, as Coach Carter only let the athletes train if they attended all classes and had high marks.  The coach imposed this with the objective that I boys would study to be able to attend some university in the future.  This film shows the reality of many poor young people, who often do not study because they think they will never attend a quality university.

Starring by a black actor, this is a good film to observe how was the life of the slaves in the United States.

On the other hand, Djamila explains through lots of articles that compose the book many aspects that black women need to deal in their life and that we probably haven’t analyse or problematize before reading it. I think it is a necessary read for men and women, black and white, to understand more about structural racism and how it goes through black women lives.

This is a strong book that causes impact and shocks the readers, everybody should give it a try to learn more about the atrocities that happened in the past.

Having a tough childhood being a black girl with a single mom during the hardest times of apartheid in south africa she soon had to stand up for her rights just as she soon had to work to help her mom. She was a domestic care giver until when she turned thirteen and won a singing contest. After that she started to sing in birthdays, weddings and concerts which all were separated between white and "colored" people because of the apartheid. Soon after this time she got a role on a anti-apartheid movie starting her political life. She won many prizes for her acting and one of them had to travel to festival in  Veneza. In this trip, when she tried to come back to her country she couldn't - South africa's government had banned her. With that situation in hands she moved to the United States where she become wordly famous and testified agaist the apartheid in the United Nations.

He committed in 1999. Hamilton's participation in politics is an exemple of how the black movement was present and important in the fight against the military dictatorship even though the this fight many times is remembered as a group of only white college students.

This best-selling novel is a must-read, specially with the increasing number of cases of violence brutality against black people.
