However, I believe schools are a reflection of community, culture and so much more. The teachers I met over the years knew so much about the community I grew up in. They were alive for the "classic" music I was so hungry to learn more about. My friends I met in school all had different specialties, one could teach me about soccer while another could teach me everything about their favorite tv show, and another about their religion. School taught me about civic skills when we had off for federal holidays, voting day, county fair day, and when the superintendent and the school board came to tour our dilapidated building. So, I do strongly believe that school is a microcosm of the greater community and therefore it bestows countless bits of wisdom.

Sources of Knowledge
When I thought about this question, my mother immediately came to mind. She is a force. I also learned from and continued to be guided by my husband, children, friends, colleagues, one or two teachers, random people, and always books/podcasts/webinars/documentaries. I also learned through caring and teaching others.

Original of Knowledge: Before watching Michelle King's and Munir Fasheh's videos, I would have said "formal education" and neglected to mention my other learning experiences. Yes, formal education provided me the knowledge to conform to the world. But my ancestral and familial instruction and knowledge taught me how to survive and navigate the world. Sometimes, the instruction was kind, and other times, it was harsh. I also learned from trial and error, always (sometimes) from my mistakes, traveling to different countries, interactions, and experiences with many different people. As Alex mentioned, I also learned from observation. This is a rather rambling answer, but learning occurs in many ways and different spaces. Sadly, within formal learning environments, we denigrate and relegate other sources of knowledge (maybe) because we can't categorize and assess them. I think this is one of Munir's points. Thinking differently: I like to invite folks to bring their experiences (personal and professional, etc.) into the classroom to broaden our collective understanding.

My parents are really young and I think it helps them and me because of how many levels we relate on. I also feel very safe talking with my parents and I trust them because I know what they’ve been through. My parents have seen a lot and they can speak on it.

Ø I learn through trying to be a a good example for my two younger brothers. I am very close with both of my brothers, one is 3 years younger than me, and the other is 6 years younger than me. I also learn from them all the time, my youngest brother has to be one of the smartest people I know. I learn about them through conversations, we could talk forever once one of us starts, it is hard to stop.

Ø My knowledge comes from school and all of the courses I have taken. In these courses I have not only learned about applied developmental psychology but I’ve also learned skills that I can use outside of the classroom every day.

Ø Another place a lot of my knowledge comes from is my coaches. I have learned time-management, people skills, resiliency, listening and communication from my coaches growing up. I have been running since I was in elementary school, I have had so many different coaches and experiences over the years. I learned the most probably through my college coaches and my club track coaches. They have taught me what it’s like to keep fighting even when you feel like you can’t anymore. That is a skill that I often see in my life even when it doesn’t involve track.

Ø I have learned a lot through work and what it means for everyone to put in equal effort.

Ø I learn through social media and television shows especially when it comes to style and what is “in” at the current time.

Ø Experience, I’ve learned so much through my lived experiences.

How much of your wisdom do you attribute to school?

Ø I attribute a lot of my wisdom to school. If I’m being honest, MOST of my wisdom I attribute to the sport track. I have learned a lot of people skills in track and mostly how to survive through track. My coaches have been like parents away from home to me and they teach me more about myself than I like to admit. I feel like they see the things I don’t and are always pointing them out and trying to help better me. My coaches definitely want what’s best for me and it has shown throughout my life. I attribute some of my wisdom to school because that is where I learn about things that my coaches and parents can’t necessarily teach me. A lot of what I learn in school is what I hope to use in a professional setting one day. I have met so many great people throughout my years of school who have had a huge impact on me and who I hope to become. Teachers and professors have played a big role in my success academically. I’ve had teachers who have worked really hard with me to get me where I want to be and I think that is so important. I’m not just a number to my teachers and professors, I am a person!

Who and What?
My teachers in life are my parents, my colleagues, coaches, and my wife. I have been blessed to be surrounded with very hard working, successful people. Starting at a young age I have always tried to emulate the successful people around me. I challenge myself to learn from what they do and create a version of it that works for me. I have been fortunate to have the closest people to me be the best teachers

Where?
I would say my knowledge came from three different areas; school, family and experience. School obviously taught me everything I know from an academic standpoint. My family taught me how to act, right from wrong, good morals and values. However, I have to give credit for most of my knowledge would to my life experiences. I feel that I have learned the most through trial and error. Personally seeing what worked and didn’t work for me helped me grow and develop into the person I am today. Seeing how hard I had to work to achieve something and experiencing failure have been vital in my learning process. I think experiences is crucial in overall knowledge and wisdom.

How Much?

If I am being fully transparent, I don’t think much of my wisdom is one of the skill sets I took away from school. It may have given me some of the wisdom I possess today but school developed me in other ways. My wisdom came from other areas of my life. I have been on this earth for almost 28 years. School has been a huge part of that but I really attribute my wisdom to my experiences collectively.

School was where I learned to read, write, use a computer, learned math skills, learned the history of the United States and the world, and learned other important things that are necessary to learn for life. I made friends, developed relationships with teachers, and interacted with classmates which helped me gain wisdom. I feel the knowledge you learn in school gives you the tools and allows you to gain wisdom in other ways. So, I would say about 35-40% of my wisdom comes from school. I feel a lot of my wisdom though comes from my faults/learned lessons in life/losses. The lessons I learned from not-so-good relationships, losses in sport, a bad day, etc. have helped me gain more wisdom I feel than school ever could. These personal experiences gave me the wisdom to grow and learn from these experiences. I also feel a lot of my wisdom comes from home. I come from a close family and I am one of four siblings. Our parents always read to us when we were children, taught us manners, right and wrong, and helped us build relationships with others and one another. I also saw another classmate posted about how they learned a lot of knowledge when they just shut up and listened! I have just started to learn how important it is, and am trying to shut up and listen more in my life too. Already, I have gained more wisdom than I ever thought I could by listening to others more closely.

When thinking about where knowledge comes from, one could begin to dive into so many different routes. After watching and listening to Dr. King and Dr. Fasheh’s speeches, I believe I was able to articulate the various sources of the knowledge I have acquired over the years. So many different sources have provided a lifetime full of informal and formal education for me to shape who I am today.

Who and what are your teachers in life?

I believe addressing the question of who and what are your teachers in life to the fullest would take pages and pages to write because throughout our lifetime we come across many people and experiences that provide us with such understanding.

Looking at who first, I think that almost every person you come across in your life can be a teacher to you in some sense. People you have never met can also play this kind of role, through secondhand instruction and beyond. Major teachers would be your parents, siblings, other family members, friends, schoolteachers, coaches, etc., however it is important to recognize even strangers can teach you some of life’s most valuable lessons. Personally, I feel as though my mom was the most influential teacher that was a person in my life, however there are so many things that I know now from both my academic and social experiences that I have participated in, in which she has not.

When looking at what are your teachers in life, I think the what can be much more influential than the who. What we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel all can teach us lessons and provide us with knowledge. A simple personal example I have is when I was a young child, I burned my hand on the stove. Although I had likely been told before not to do so, until I went through that experience, I was still willing to mess around in the kitchen. However, through that experience, I gained the knowledge and understanding too never do so again. A much more serious experience I endured was that my uncle dove into a swimming pool and was paralyzed from the waist down. We see signs everywhere at pools to not do so, however many still do all the time. This experience taught me the importance of those signs and I continue to try and spread that knowledge any time I am swimming. Such informal examples of education sometimes cannot be as recognizable as classroom instruction; however, the same principles apply in some situations.

Where did your knowledge come from?

I believe that our knowledge is them ingrained in us from these teachers. Individuals and experiences that shape who we are, are essentially an accumulation of our knowledge. These different sources all have their own personalized sources that attribute to the knowledge they consume and provide.

Therefore, my personal knowledge is an accumulation of all the people, lessons, stories, experiences, and tests I have had in my life. As a master’s student, it seems as though all the knowledge I am taking in now is academically driven, however these people and experiences are still placing every day adding to my knowledge.

I think another aspect to mention about where your knowledge comes from is very person-based, meaning knowledge can come from oneself. I believe a lot of my knowledge came from outside sources however my interpretation and understanding of such matters changed the way I view and the wisdom I possess.

How much of your wisdom do you attribute to school?

I attribute a large amount of my wisdom to school. However, this is not just dealing with the course material or subject matter. The lessons learned and experiences that take place in the school system are just as much if not more when looking are the knowledge I possess. Beyond academics, schools teach social skills, civics, culture, friendship, challenges, behavior skills, problem solving, likes, dislikes, and so much more. Many people recognize how much wisdom is attributed to schooling; however, they do not always realize why it is this way and how one source can provide so many different outlets.

Who and what are your teachers in life?

* As I was writing, I felt compelled to return to the top of my response to provide a big ole caveat to the map of what I know: that I live with a (healthy) disposition of doubt. Sure, there are empirical, objective facts that I can say I know; I feel I'd be half decent at Jeopardy! if given the chance... However, I recognize that assurance is next to arrogance. Rather, being a citizen - being a being endowed with curiosity - necessitates constant examination of the world around us. *

- My parents
- My wife
- My kids
- My church community
- My students
- My coworkers
- My professors
- Within my past, having come from a family of teachers, we placed a high premium on institutionalized, academic knowledge.
- To that end, I had a few stand-out teachers who truly shaped the course of my life and altered the way I perceived that world.
- I feel that one of my biggest teachers has been the political context of my adult life - the sudden clash of civilizations after 9/11 under Bush, the rise of factionalism / tribalism during the Obama years, the surprising (to me) weaponization of post-modernism by the Trump administration, the rise of wokism (if that's a legitimate term?) and the racial awakening through the pandemic. Generally, I'm benefitted from having to grapple with the world around me and adapt / expand my worldview to accommodate new realities.

Where did your knowledge come from?

I like exploring philosophy. I like reading literature that forces me to examine the nature of humanity. I like purely academic pursuits. So, a large portion of this answer is "books." However, as I noted above, everything I read and think has to be reality tested against the world at my doorstep and adapted if needed. In that sense, there's hardly a better source for knowledge than experience.

How much of your wisdom do you attribute to school?

It's hard to measure, as academic learning and experiential / community-based learning are so intertwined with how I live my life. What I will say, though, is that school gave me the intellectual framework to be able to explore new ideas and integrate them into my worldview.
