The study explored genetic and environmental factors in adolescent tobacco and marijuana addiction. Researchers interviewed 626 male and female twins born in the same year: 188 identical and 101 non-identical male twins, and 223 identical and 114 non-identical female twins. They were questioned about their drug use history, home environment, and completed a questionnaire. The study revealed a heritability of 10% to 25% for marijuana use and a higher heritability of 40% to 60% for tobacco use, with no significant gender differences. However, the shared environment played a significant role. This suggests that environmental factors outweigh genetic inheritance in influencing drug use patterns.

Fernandez-Pujals et al conducted a larger study into the heritablity of MDD. The study involved approximately 21,000 people who were recommended by Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study. Out of these 21,000 people 2,706 of them were diagnosed as suffering one or more episodes of MDD.
