First two weeks of distance learning I was doing so many trainings on all of the options for apps that I got overwhelmed. But once I narrowed my focus of what would work for my class subject and my students, things have gotten much better. The one issue that I would say is also a problem, is making sure the students know how to use the app properly. Because if they don't understand it, or it isn't easy to use, you will be inundated with emails, and frustrated kids. And that will make them want to stop participating.

I've added a screenshot that has a lot of online resources to use during this time. Unfortunately I can't share all the links directly because this is from the myAVID site. But at least this shows you names that you could then search for.
I've used this a lot to help me organize and create things for my students to use and interact with.

I also feel like we need to ask our students how they are feeling and doing. Because in the end, this is all about relationships with our students. And if we have those, they are more apt to participate in our online classes.

-Reconnect with your BIGGEST learning target of all. For me, it's providing opportunities for students to feel positive about school engagement (keeping in mind that means different things to different kids--for some it IS academics, for many others, it's positive & encouraging relationships w/ adults outside their homes).

-This is easy for me to do in the classroom, because I get 83 minutes every day to encourage and support them!

-Without my presence, their interaction with my classwork is through emails, assignments, perhaps some arguments with adults at home, and 30 minutes of face-to-face time with me a week.

-No matter how good my assignments are or how strong of a connections we had in "The Before Times," it just doesn't match how things are now.

-So if my assignments, website design, schedule, etc are causing insurmountable frustrations for them at this time, I MUST listen to that feedback, even if I truly believe I made it as accessible as I possible.

-Given that I have about 15% of my students who engage positively with school through academics, I can therefore focus 15% of my planning time creating higher rigor opportunities for them. For my other 85% of students, I really need them to feel positive and confident about school. How can I re-approach my design to enable that?

-It's too nerve-wracking for me to sit around waiting for the possibility of kids... Instead, I've assigned them times (used Canvas groups, but also direct emailing and a public spreadsheet).

-I scheduled my groups by reading level with very high hopes of fully functional book clubs focusing on targeted skills. My colleague made groups based on social groups & let them decide what kinds of topics they wanted to read about. Guess who has higher engagement...?

-I think I overscheduled small groups at the beginning (13x30 min small group sessions/week...) and now I'm probably going to combine at least 8 of those groups into 4 instead)

- I use ONE zoom link and ONE password. I keep that invitation pasted to the stickies app on my laptop so whenever I need it I can copy & paste right away

I'm trying a 2-tiered approach...

-One tier is ongoing targeted reading instruction (their small group gets assigned a leveled reading skill which they are ~supposed to~ practice in their Reading Notebooks, which we then discuss in weekly 30 min zooms)

-The other tier is the mini-micro bites of learning that I'm trying to aim toward my 85% of students who are, to be honest, struggling. The goal is to give them something they can open, do, and finish within 20 minutes. No extra links or saved documents required! Here's an example where I wanted them to practice analysis

-My goal for the second tier is to make sure there's something EVERY week that my students can fully do independently and feel successful with--which is what will keep them connected to school and learning (::she said with fingers crossed so hard her knuckles popped::)

A HUGE slide deck can be (and was) overwhelming for students... So here's a huge slide deck.

However, everything in here is just intended to be resources and examples for students as they try out lots of different ways to engage with their reading.

-Big takeaways: edit slide masters to put instructions on templates! Creating a deck with lots of "work space" around each slide offers a lot more adaptability (slides are custom sized to 8.5 x 11, which means there's a lot of space around each one to store ideas and resources as they work)
