The ice plant is a little-known vegetable of the southern hemisphere, now introduced to warm areas in the north. It is seldom grown in Florida gardens and is unlikely to become more than a curiosity plant.

Ice plant is named after the shimmering silvery dots that cover the leaves. Other names used for it are fig marigold (after the edible fruits), frost plant, diamond plant, mid-day flowers, and dew plant. This is not to be confused with New Zealand spinach, which is sometimes referred to in gardening booklets as New Zealand ice plant.

The plant is a perennial, but is grown in gardens as an annual. It is a small (about the size of bibb lettuce), peculiar looking plant with numerous 12–15 inch long stems. Blades of the leaves widen towards the outer ends and become narrow near the stalk.

All green parts of the plant are covered with small, transparent, membranous bladders, which give the plant the appearance of being covered with frozen dew. Each tiny, white flower has a swollen calyx covered with the bladders. Seeds are very small, black, and shiny.

Kangkong, also known as water glorybind, water spinach, water convolvulus, and swamp cabbage, is an important green leafy vegetable in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Malaysia. It is found throughout the fresh waters of southern China, and is cultivated in countries such as Ceylon. Kangkong has not become very popular elsewhere, particularly here in Florida where its production is discouraged. Our climate is favorable, and given wet soil conditions it would produce well here. Tight precautions should be taken to see that it does not become an established weed in our waterways. The Florida Department of Natural Resources must issue a special permit to anyone wanting to grow kangkong.

Beginning in the 16th century, mangos were gradually distributed around the world, reaching the Americas in the 18th century. The first recorded introduction into Florida was Cape Sable in 1833.

Importance: Mangos are universally considered one of the finest fruits and are one of the most important fruit crops in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Increasing commercial acreage and improved handling methods and shipping throughout the world have increased the mango's popularity and availability in US markets. Major producers include India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines. Other important producers are Australia, South Africa, Israel, and Egypt. In the U.S., Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii have small but locally important industries.

Description

Tree

A medium to large (30 to 100 ft; 9.1 to 30.5 m), evergreen tree, with a symmetrical, rounded canopy ranging from low and dense to upright and open.

It was seeded the last of August and placed in the garden the first of September. The striking leaves were shaped like those of eggplant. An average leaf measures 8 to 12 inches long by 6 inches wide. The largest leaves were 20 inches long and 12 to 15 inches wide. Leaf veins were purple, contrasting vividly with a dull green leaf surface that is somewhat iridescent. Leaves are covered on top and bottom by short fuzz, as were the stems and petioles.

Fruit are sometimes called "golden fruit of the Andes." The golf-ball sized fruits are filled with gelatin and are used in drinks and sauces. They ripen to a golden yellow color and are slightly rough in texture. The acidic, green interior contains several white seeds.

A variety commonly grown in Florida is listed in seed catalogs as 'Red Egyptian Topset.'
Description

As the names imply, the top bears the bulb, bulbils, or bulblets, instead of flowers and seeds. No bulb forms at the base of the stem, but several offsets are produced there. Otherwise the tree onion plant resembles a green onion plant or, more closely, a shallot.

: Several ornamental Passiflora species are available in Florida, but should not be confused with the three fruit-bearing vines. Ordinarily, these ornamental vines produce no fruit and comprise the Red Passionflower , Passiflora coccinea Aub1. And two hybrids P.alato-caerulea ( sometimes called P.pfordtii ) and the Passionaria Incense ( P.incarnata L. x P. cincinnata Masters). Hybrids produce spectacular blue and mauve flowers, respectively. In this way, the color of the flowers differentiates these ornamental vines from the fruit trees, which have a pale white or brown color in the form of a lamp. Passiflora incarnata L., wild passion fruit, is a wild species native to the region between central Florida and Pennsylvania through north and south Illinois, Missouri and Kansas to the west. This vine produces a small but edible fruit Origin : Tropical regions of America. Distribution : It has been introduced and cultivated in most of the tropical and subtropical regions of the planet and has commercial importance in Australia, Hawaii, South Africa and Brazil.
Description

Plant

It is a vigorous vine. Both yellow and purple passion fruit have trilobate leaves 4-7 "(10-18 cm) in length with finely serrated margins. Giant granadilla has rounded leaves 4-8 "(10-20 cm) in length and its stem is characteristically square when cut transversely.
Giant granadilla produces an irregularly rounded or oblong fruit that has a length of 4-8 "(10-20 cm) and has, in addition to the seeds surrounded by juice, a thick edible pulp. It can achieve a weight of 8-16 oz (225-450 g) or more.
flowers

Purple passion fruit flowers are usually smaller in diameter than yellow ones, around 1.75 "(4.5 cm) and 2.5" (6 cm), respectively. Both have a pale white color with intense blue centers. The flowers of the giant granadilla are completely different; Are arranged as the screens of ancient lamps and their petals are intense brown on the inner surface.
Fruiting season
Purple passion fruit flowers in early spring in Florida; Its fruits ripen from 60 to 80 days later, so that the same can be expected in late May until early July. Yellow passion fruit grows from spring to late autumn, with a rest period in early summer, so ripe fruits appear at intervals from early summer to winter. Giant granadilla begins its flowering in the spring and its fruits ripen in the summer. It can continue to bloom throughout the summer but commonly produces no fruit at that season in Florida probably because high temperatures interfere with normal fertilization after pollination. When the weather becomes cooler,
fruit

The fruit of the purple passion fruit has a round or oval shape and possesses dark purple or almost black seeds. Weighs 30 g (1-1.5 oz). The fruit of yellow passion fruit has an intense yellow color similar to purple but is slightly longer, 2.5 "(6 cm). It can reach a weight of 2-3 oz (60-90 g), but the average in Florida conditions is around 2.5 oz (75 g). The fruits contain numerous small wedge-shaped seeds that are individually surrounded by dark orange sacs (aryls) containing the juice, the edible part of the fruit.

Yuzu is a yellow-green citrus fruit that hails from Japan. It has a thick, knobby rind and a light taste. Yuzu is not as sour as lemons or limes, and the juice works well with raw fish or other delicately flavored dishes. Some chefs use yuzu in desserts such as ice cream. Yuzu is particularly high in antioxidants and contains more vitamin C than most other citrus fruits, according to research published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in 2004.
