Ethical codes relevant to LPC's

The ethical codes are set in place in order for LPC's and other counseling professionals to abide by in order to maintain a legal and ethical practice. This pertains to the role of an LPC as it helps provide guidelines on confidentiality insight on maintaining legal and ethical boundaries, as well as gives a framework for a legal and ethical practice.

Assessing Prior Knowledge

My biggest takeaway from the materials is astonishing to me. I learned more about how trauma impacts the body and mind. I learned that oftentimes, those who have experienced childhood trauma later suffer from both mental and PHYSICAL conditions. I did not know this previously and it helped me make sense of many of the chronic illnesses that I have.

Previous experiences and knowledge include an understanding that trauma has lasting mental health effects, and can often show up in adulthood. Something that I learned through experience this summer is that my claustrophobia was somewhat caused by my childhood trauma; and claustrophobia can show up in more ways that I thought. I initially thought that it was just a fear or hatred of small spaces, and did my best to keep from feeling "boxed in" in life. However after a major move to a house that ended up being unlivable, I realized that part of claustrophobia can show up as FEELING boxed in, regardless of the size of space someone is in. That was a powerful realization. I took two quizzes and the first (Channel kindness), I'm not necessarily counting because no matter how many times I took it or what I changed my answer to, it said I got 0 correct. The second quiz that I took, Deconstructing Stigma, I got about 50% accuracy which was both shocking and puzzling to me because I've lived and learned so much from trauma and mental health concerns have been in my life as long as I can remember. I'd think I'd have a firmer grasp on the statistics of mental health.

In my future role as an LPC who specializes in trauma, I feel that the more I can learn about trauma, the more I can grow in order to help others who have experienced it as well. Thinking on this, I realized that I want to do my very best to not project my trauma's or lived experiences onto those who I am working with; and think it is important to practice self care when possible between each client. By doing something significant but small to nourish my personal needs and growth, I will hopefully be able to start the next session with a clear, fresh mind.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has valuable and useful information on both mental health and trauma. This article and the articles that are linked in the article offer important information on trauma, mental health, and how each of them effects others. Their website is linked here https://www.samhsa.gov/trauma-violence (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2022)

                                                                            References

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

This part of the class has by far been the most informative and inspiring. The way individuals process trauma differently is awe inspiring. I have learned that children are more susceptible to negative effects of trauma due to their brain not fully being developed. Reading the materials and watching the documentary has been helpful to me as a mental health professional and someone who works with children!

Psychological First Aid is something I never really considered until taking this course. Through the modules, I learned the best ways to help and handle people who have been touched by a crisis without giving false hope or making them feel as if I have more control over a situation than I do. I learned to listen and respond with more empathy and grace.

While researching crisis prevention and threat assessments for suicide and non-suicidal self-injury, I had no idea just how much I would need and utilize this information in the weeks to come. Although I had given SI and NSSI assessments in the past, immediately after this assignment I had an encounter with a student who had both suicidal ideation and practiced self-harm. I realized how heavily counselors need to focus on the prevention piece of SI and NSSI and what to do when needing to be reactive in a case such as this.

Unit 3 Assignment 3 Reflection and artifact for ABC Crisis Model

Writing an ABC crisis model for a case study really allowed me to break down each individual item that the case study was struggling with and understand how each part lends itself to the other. Doing so allowed me to both determine steps the counselor and counselee would need to take to ensure the counselee received the help that they need. It also alerted me to the notion that the counselee plays a part in their road to wellness as much as the counselor does. This fact helped relieve me of the burden of doing all of the things and I gained the perspective of a partnership in counseling with the client.
