Katie F
Approximately two and a half billion people around the globe now use smartphones in nearly every aspect of their everyday lives, from communicating with loved ones to sharing their ideas with the world. A survey published by the Pew Research Center in 2017 found that 77 percent of surveyed American adults owned a smartphone, including 92 percent of eighteen- to twenty-nine-year-olds. In total, an estimated 262 million smartphones were in active use in the United States in 2016, representing a 15 percent year-over-year jump from 2015. According to a 2015 report from the same organization, only South Korea, Australia, and Israel surpass the United States in the share of their population’s adults who own smartphones.

"Smartphones." 'It's a very difficult hole that we've dug for ourselves by letting this device control our lives,' he says, 'and it takes a concerted effort to divest that control, but it can be done (Chancellor, 2018)

Dante P
Excessive smartphone use has been linked with physical health issues including head and neck pain, sleep disturbances, vision problems, and the spread of germs and communicable diseases. Though not a medically diagnosed mental disorder, smartphone addiction is another salient but contentious issue of debate, with some studies appearing to show that abrupt cessation of smartphone use can cause symptoms akin to those associated with drug withdrawal. Others link the instantaneous nature of handheld connected technologies to compulsive and problematic behaviors such as gambling, online shopping, online bidding, and social isolation.

Despite counterclaims that strong attachments to smartphones and the Internet are misclassified as addictions, the prevailing consensus among experts is that connected technologies do appear to have a major impact on human behavior, cognition, and social function. The research community notes the need for further inquiry into these issues, and stresses the importance of setting limits on smartphone and connected device usage, particularly among young people (Gale 2018).

Tom J
Last week after my motorcycle malfunctioned and crashed on the freeway, I wanted only two simple things from technology: to call 911 and to tell loved ones where I could be found.Coincidentally, I had been testing location-sharing tools from Apple, Google, Facebook and Snapchat. So before calling the police, I texted my partner, who was already tracking my location with several apps, letting her know I was hurt. When she opened Google Maps, she could see precisely where I was on the 101 South freeway. But when she refreshed the map to follow the ambulance, she ran into the app's shortcomings: Google showed I was at Costco (not where I wanted to be, injured or not) when I was actually strapped onto a stretcher heading toward San Francisco General Hospital. Story about a smart phone user(Chen, 2018).

Dante P

California addressed other security concerns in a 2014 law requiring all newly manufactured smartphones sold in the state to contain features that allow users to render their phones inoperable in the event of loss or theft. The law provides enhanced personal privacy and security protections that strictly limit or eliminate the amount of personal information that could be collected on the owner of a lost or stolen device.

Smartphones are also the target of concerns over certain law enforcement agency activities. Between 2015 and 2016, the US federal government reported a 500 percent increase in the number of electronic media and smartphone searches conducted at border checkpoints. Though courts have upheld that passcodes are protected under the Fifth Amendment, in 2014, a Virginia court ruled that police had the right to compel suspects to use their fingerprints to unlock their smartphones during criminal investigations (Gale 2018).
