But we haven't found them so they must not be real.

There are several holes in this approach when dealing with mermaids. For one, people are constantly making new discoveries, but this does not mean that the discovery was not real before. When Columbus "found" America, it didn't mean that America simply didn't exist before, it just wasn't known about. In the same way, just because mermaids have not been found yet does not mean they don't exist. Additionally, with so much ocean left to explore, there is a lot we haven't found yet. There are several instances when old fisher's tales have come true, take for instance the oar fish (seen below). Overall, we know too little about our oceans to rule out the possibility of mermaids quite yet.

Conclusion

Although the video is "claimed" fake or false, we would like to reinstate the fact that 95% of the world oceans remain unexplored. There is a 95% chance of there being an organism close to a mermaid. Or something even more complex. In the documentary it stated that the Navy tried to cover it up, the Navy easily could have added a disclaimer to the end of the documentary saying that this was fake as a way to reinsure the public. It is important to be skeptical because that is how we learn. If we are not constantly questioning then we would stop learning, stop exploring. Skeptism and curiosity is the beginning of exploration.
