Definition: Red Flag: Ancient Wisdom
The red flag, Ancient wisdom includes ancient rituals, ancient practices and ancient knowledge. Ancients believed they knew more knowledge about modern day life. They believed in sacrifices and medicine that wasn’t scientifically proven to work. Example: rain dances.
Connection: Oil Pulling: Miracle Treatment or Mouthwash?
This demonstrates the red flag, Ancient wisdom because the idea of “Oil Gargling” came about from the Ancient Ayurvedic Indian medicine. It was a natural remedy for oral diseases. But it has never been proven that it works.
https://skeptoid.com/blog/2013/11/11/oil-pulling-miracle-treatment-or-woo-mouthwash/

Definition: Red Flag: Red Herring

The red flag, Red Herring is when a topic is introduced to de rail a certain argument or debate that is already underway to distract people from original debate.

Connection:

This demonstrates Red herring because it’s a topic used to distract the other person from discussing that first topic.

Person 1: “Hey, do you think the lochness monster really exists?

Person 2: “I’ve always wanted to go to Scotland, it’s supposed to be really pretty there”

Person 3: “Yeah, I heard they drink a lot there too”

Topic has been changed.

Definition Confirmation Bias

The red flag Confirmation bias is when you say something repeatedly that isn’t true, you end up believe it is true. When people want to believe something to be true, before there is no facts or evidence to back it up, they’ll start believing it’s true.

Connection:

This demonstrates Confirmation Bias because before people fact check and get evidence, they just start to believe that what they think is true, is actually true.

Definition: Red Flag: Appeal to Authority

The red flag, appeal to authority means the use of a person with authority (a cop, a doctor) can make a product have more appeal to it.

Connection: Marilyn Monroe & Shampoo

This demonstrates appeal to authority because Marilyn Monroe is on the ad for the Shampoo brand, so it must be the best brand, right? Or is it only the best brand because a celebrity is on the ad.

Does the claim make sense?

Connection: Chakra Stones

This demonstrates Mystical Energy because people believe Chakra stones are something that heal the body and mind.

Definition: Reasons for belief: Emotional connection

Emotional connection is a reason for belief because when we are emotionally connected to something or someone, it blocks our brains from being rational when it comes to thinking clearly.

Connection: Believing in ghosts

This demonstrates emotional connection because some people believe in the dead, they may not believe in the whole theory of the living dead but just that one person who they had a personal connection with.
