Bahrain was the first country in the region to instigate a public school system and also to admit female pupils to all levels of education. Education is free to all children in Bahrain and is compulsory from age 6 to age 14.

 • 95.7%of countries population is literate, 93.5% female literacy in Arab peninsula. 

• Kindergartens are supervised by the Ministry of Education, Directorate of Private Education. Nurseries fall under the responsibility and control of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. 

• Pre-school education is provided by the private sector only. Kindergartens cater to children aged 3-5, nurseries cater to children under 3 years of age. The pre-primary education stage is not integrated into the national education system.

 • A unified preschool curriculum document was prepared and implemented in 2005/2006. 

• The curriculum aims at preparing children for school life by acquiring a set of common values, concepts, skills and competencies tailored to the needs of kindergarten children while taking into account their individual needs.

 • The University of Bahrain plays a major role in training the educational staff. The college of education offers the Associate Diploma in Early Childhood (ADEC). This diploma aims at preparing early childhood teachers capable of helping learners acquire experiences in an integrated form. The total number of credits to be completed in this programme is 65. There are also private educational institutions which provide training for early childcare education teachers, such as the Delmon Academy, and the Montessori Centre.

 • The two leading tertiary institutions are the Bahrain Polytechnic which aims to shape a modern, more inclusive culture where Islam and Science may be blended, and the University of Bahrain. 

• Several recent private colleges have introduced lower standards, which are being countered by a system of quality control. 

• Bahrain offers a wide range of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in both its public and private universities. International and business degrees (MBA) are particularly popular, with many courses being taught in English. An undergraduate degree generally takes around three to four years to complete and a Master’s takes around two to three years.
