They wanted to create a perfect society with no evil or works of the devil, including witches. When someone was accused of being a witch, they were "witch tested" and often tried and sent to prison. The witch hunt of 1692 consisted of  hundreds of people being accused of being a witch after a group of girls who were seen as "possessed" revealed the names of the witches in the town that performed witchcraft.
