'It must be true ... '

A pair of newlyweds in the US spent their first night as man and wife behind bars after being caught stealing food for their wedding reception. Arthur Phillips, 32, and Brittany Lurch, 22, were caught wheeling a trolley carrying $600 of drinks and snacks from a supermarket. They were locked in separate cells while the party went ahead without them.

A music fan gatecrashed a festival by dressing himself up in a police uniform that he'd taken from a police car. Daniel Tredinnick broke up a fight, called paramedics to treat an injured festival-goer and found a missing person before being arrested. 'Strangely enough, he did more good than harm,' said his lawyer.

The mayor of Vilnius in Lithuania did a good turn for cyclists this week when he used a Soviet-era tank to crush a Mercedes that was parked in a cycle lane. 'That's what happens if you park your car illegally,' said the mayor, before sweeping up the remains of the broken glass and riding away on a bicycle. Although this event was planned, mayor Artura Zuokas insists he is serious about punishing owners of luxury vehicles who think they are above the law.

Virgin Atlantic has released details of some of the strangest items that passengers have tried to check in at airports. One woman turned up at JFK airport, USA, with family members carrying her bath. A couple who fell in love while on holiday in Grenada tried to ring back a bag full of sand and seawater as a souvenir. And staff had to turn away the passengers who tried to check in a dead cow, a car engine and a bag stuffed full of cutlery from a previous Virgin flight.

A beggar has discovered that he gets more money if he's not there. Fed up with being ignored by passers-by, Nemanja Petrovic left his cap and his shoes on the street next to a sign reading 'Invisible Beggar'. When he returned, his cap was full of cash. 'Now I just put down the sign and wait for the donations to roll in while I have a coffee,' he said.

A new sport is catching: rabbit show-jumping. The contests originated in Scandinavia, and are really taking off in Germany, with 22 new clubs opening in the past year. The toughest course has 12 high jumps up to 40 cm in height, and 3 long jumps. 'Not every rabbit is suitable,' says breeder Karsten Schmid. 'But if your rabbit is outgoing, he is probably up for it.'

Glossary:
gatecrashed - entered without a ticket
harm - damage
did a good turn - supported/ helped people
above the law - rules don't apply to them
cutlery - knives and forks
ignored - paid no attention to
taking off - becoming popular
toughest - most difficult
up for it - keen to do something
