I am excited to be part of the team!]]> 2021-01-28 13:13:47 UTC https://padlet.com/victoriarestler/zrjy2r6fl1fhij8c/wish/1136147529 Stephen https://padlet.com/victoriarestler/zrjy2r6fl1fhij8c/wish/1138783815 A cool moment that happened while I was working on part of my internship was that I honestly felt like my input was being used and meant a lot.  What I mean by that is when I was meeting with my internship leader going over my ideas and work for the YDEV website and how to make it better and more appealing I could tell it was actually being taken in and was meaningful and was seen as a positive and insightful response and not just a bunch of stuff to be pushed aside.  That was a really cool moment and felt really good to know what I was saying and suggesting was actually important.

These workshops were also trainings that not only help me see where I am right and wrong, but to help me gain confidence in my internship as well as increasing my internship hours. The workshop that resonated with me the most was: Building Equitable Learning Spaces as it helped me see how I can make sure students needs are being met. This session took place on 1/28/21 and it talked about the lives of every student, but also students of color and why they feel misunderstood and discriminated in their educational settings. Instead of leaving them disengaged them, a job for me as an educator is to become a role model to them, ask the student what they know and what brought them into the space and see how they can influence me. Iv learned  about how a budget is created and balanced,  iv learned about how the choice is made to cut programs, most recently we discussed staff and how you keep your teachers in check with themselves. One of the coordinators is my mentor and she is amazing! She is one of the only staff that has been there since I started this job in 2019. She always checks in through email to see If I need anything and to see how things are going. She is always one to give me positive feedback. Each shift I have with my clients (individuals we call them at KFS) I am able to reflect on how it went as I write progress notes. These are required to fill out each shift. Sometimes they seem like an inconvenience but it allows me to look back and reflect on how effective out activities were for the day. I would not change the way I am being mentored. I feel as though my mentor has given me everything Ive needed and always reaches out to check in which gives me a chance to address any concerns I have.

Both of the teachers noticed that the scholars were starting to get really frustrated with not understanding the content. It was hard to schedule a time and place, eventually it happened with great persistence. Additionally, starting off my internship/job the main source of communication was through texting. I also persisted to start using email as a more formal way to communicate and so work didn't seep into personal life more than it needed too (although it naturally did).

In order for a mentor to be an effective leader, they should have a focused time for different areas of work. I love creative freedom and flexible work schedules but also understand the great benefit of having a basic structure to assist in focused communication & work/life boundaries.

Recently a lot of our staff has been changing a lot and I am one of the few that they have had stay and the one consistent staff they have right now. With all of these staff changes there has been a lot of inconsistency in the dorm. I find it important to hold the children accountable for their actions and behaviors because that is what will help them. I find it hard to hold them accountable when other staff have been letting them get away with so much.
