In WW1, there were two major alliances included in the war the Triple Alliance which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, which included England, France, and Russia, Before WW1, these alliances existed:

France and Russia

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Serbia and Russia had an alliance. Russia was then dragged into the war. When Germany saw that, (because Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany and Russia had one with Serbia) Germany declared war on Russia. France was dragged in because France had an alliance with Russia so they were against Austria-Hungary and Germany. Then when Germany attacked France through Belgium, brought Britain into the war. Now because Britain and Japan had an alliance, then Japan entered the war. Later it was followed by the United States and Italy.
