At 7:02 AM, one of the U.S Army radar operators spotted a large formation of unidentified planes heading straight towards Pearl Harbour. This report was disregarded by the army lieutenant and believed it was the group of American B-17 bomber planes that was scheduled to arrive that day. This was one of the missed opportunity for the U.S to prepare for the incoming attack.

At 7:55 on December 7th, 1941, the coordinated attack on Pearl Harbour began. Within the next half an hour, Pearl Harbour was attacked mercilessly by bombs, guns, and torpedos. The Japanese not only hit the American's Naval Base in Pearl Harbour, but also struck airfields and aircraft to prevent an American counter-attack. Of the 126 planes on the ground, only 6 were able to get into the air and attempt to repel the Japanese. The rest of the planes were either destroyed, damaged, or in need of major servicing.

This bomb lifted the 33.000 ton vessel out of the water however not just because of the bomb itself, it was the ship's own ammunition exploding all at the same time. 1,177 sailors and marines were instantly killed. The explosion of the USS Arizona counted for about half of the casualties in the whole attack on Pearl Harbour.

At 8:17 AM the destroyer USS Helm fires at a Japanese submarine and sinks it at the entrance of the harbour. It is believed that the USS Helm was actually responsible for taking out two Japanese aircraft, however the sinking of the submarine was it's main contribution to Pearl Harbour. On the Japanese submarine were two pilots, one of them did not make it out of the submarine when trying to escape and ended up drowning. However the second pilot was taken alive and became the first prisoner captured by the US in the Second World War.
