Recreational Use of Marijuana Becomes Legal Across Canada by

On October 17, 2018, Canada became the second country in the world to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Back in June of 2018, the Senate passed Bill C-45, accepting Canada's new marijuana legislation and ending a 90-year prohibition. Described as a 'historic' moment (Dean, 2018), Canadians from all 10 provinces and 3 territories are now legally allowed to purchase, consume, and possess marijuana. Having the substance now strictly regulated by the government, Canada is aiming to keep profits out of the hands of criminals and keep children and communities protected.

The conference itself is done in a panel setting where reporters have a chance to ask questions to some government officials. Questions range from what is legal, what the restrictions are, bringing marijuana across the boarder, and much more. Offering this sort of conference to users on social media is a way to make these sorts of discussions accessible to a larger audience.

This is a video recording of a news segment by MSNBC posted to Youtube on the day of legalization. This social media post was made by an organization based in the United States, which offers a unique perspective on the topic. The video touches on many aspects, including a discussion about how the United States may be missing out on economic opportunities by not joining Canada in nation-wide legalization. A reporter is also shown visiting one of the marijuana retail locations in a major Canadian city and showing a seemingly-endless line of people waiting to make their purchase. This is a great representation of just how high the demand in Canada really is and how the country is reacting to legalization.

This is a blog post made on MTLBlog by the writer Thomas MacDonald made nearly a month after legalization took place. This is a post that shows an insight into how well the new law has been working in its first month. The blog post depicts the first month as not being as successful as anticipated. It is explained that this is mainly caused by how the government rushed legalization without being full prepared, as well as how demand is not being fulfilled. A blog post such as this one is great at providing an update into the aftermath of the situation while also providing concrete facts to support the writer's opinion that legalization is failing.
