A huge emphasis of Neoliberalism ideology is its privatization sector, which includes the privatization of prisons; this is where the big corporations use jails and prisons for profit purposes. Due to the idea of making profits out of the correctional facilities this only incentivizes mass incarceration as these corporations profit from higher imprisonment rates. Moreover, another idea of privatization and neoliberalism is cost-cutting, therefore we can potentially anticipate compromisation in the quality of rehabilitation and the welfare of the inmates. Furthermore, another aspect of neoliberalism is having limited government intervention which can lead to tough-on- crime policies such as being incarcerated for not-so-serious crimes and incorporating three-strike laws, which is where a defendant who was convicted of a non-violent felony and is convicted of a nonviolent felony after the second time is subjected to a harsher punishment than they were the first and second time. With the establishment of such policies, the prison population will only result in the growth of the prison population, as more individuals are imprisoned for long periods for non-violent crimes. Connecting this idea back to the privatization sector, the big corporations will then profit from such policies along with the privatization of the prisons because laws will be stricter and tougher with neoliberalism, there will be an automatic increase in the number of inmates, therefore economically benefiting the big corporations. Neoliberalism may seem great for the economy as it allows free trade, no tariff on imports, limiting government intervention and deregulation; however, it is not so great for the criminal justice system as it prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation or reform of inmates and perpetuates more social inequalities.
