- organisation: to ensure that learners understand the purpose and to plan carefully so that the induction is full of useful activities rather than just going through induction handbook.
- opportunities for the tutors and learners to bond: from my previous experience, there is very little time for the learners to get to know the tutors. It is a crucial time for the learners to have a chance to know a bit of the tutors and kick start a good relationship.
- time to talk: it is important to identify learners' needs from the start so the tutors can provide immediate help to the learners or perhaps the learners need to be transferred to another course if they are not at the right course or level.
- Information, information and information: learners who are new to the learning environment require help to nevigate or find out where to ask what questions.
- Engage learners: learners who are already on the course should be involved in helping the new learners. It is a fantastic opportunity to engage them and include in planning the induction programme.

Sorry about the essay.....too many ideas!

- Establishing needs - a lot of students do not declare additional needs/committments early on which then makes it very difficult for them throughout the year, and staff are not always aware
- Building rapport - we want the learners to feel comfortable coming to us for help
- Planning - I think in our college, too many "facts and figures" gets thrown at them straight away and they struggle to remember it down the line. Picking out the things they NEED to know there and then, and maybe saving the rest to drip feed as the weeks go by might work better. Maybe the most important thing to know is where to go for more information if they need it - as they will not remember everything they are told in that first week!
