         <description><![CDATA[<p>A real-world challenge or situation that students work to solve. These problems should be complex, open-ended, and relevant to students' lives. ▪Present the "<strong>Scenario"</strong> problem statement. Introduce an "<strong>ill-structured</strong>" problem or scenario to students. You may think that they do not have enough prior knowledge to solve the problem. This simply means they will have to gather necessary information or learn new concepts, principles, or skills as they engage in the problem-solving process.<br><br>Collaboration Strategy: Use Think-Pair-Share to have students first individually brainstorm the problem, then discuss with a partner, and finally share insights with the whole class.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>An open-ended, engaging question that guides the entire PBL unit and promotes deeper learning. Once the teacher develops the scenario, you should create a statement that helps students focus on their task. The statement you write should identify the problem you want the students to repeat back to you, and reflect on during the lesson</p><p><br></p><p>A problem statement should come from the students' analysis of what they know. The problem statement will probably have to be refined as new information is discovered and brought to bear on the situation. Gukeisen (2013) provides some important steps in creating problem Statements (click link above)<br><br>Collaboration Strategy: Use a Question Formulation Technique (QFT) session where teams work together to refine and improve their Problem Statement.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Hypothesis=variable ideas, theories, or hunches.</p><p>The scenario will allow the reader an opportunity to indicate some theories or hypotheses about the cause of the problem or ideas about how to solve the problem. Click the link above to see the examples of Common Hypothesis Activities from Brown &amp; Croft (2020) and Novak, E. et al. (2012).<br><br>Collaboration Strategy: Think-pair-share (TPS) is a structured collaborative learning strategy that includes the three steps listed in its name. Students are given a task or problem to work on and think about a possible solution or a pathway to finding the solution before working with a partner to solve the problem. Finally, they are asked to share their solutions. The sharing portion can be within a small group or the whole class.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>A rubric is a scoring tool that assesses student work against a set of criteria. </p><p><br></p><p>Rubrics can be used to evaluate a variety of assignments, including research papers, presentations, and group projects. Clear standards and rubrics that define quality work in PBL. The Rubric is introduced to the student before conducting&nbsp;the Hypotheses; so students know what to expect. Use the AI for Education link (click above) to create a Rubric for your lesson.<br><br>Collaboration Strategy: Have students co-create rubrics in teams, then share and combine their ideas to develop final assessment criteria.</p>]]></description>
