Use your pencil and/or drawing tool of choice to create an 8-step VALUE SCALE.
STEP 2:
Choose 2 paintings by Jean-Siméon Chardin, one still life and one figurative. 
Create two thumbnail sketches of each painting (4 total):
  • Thumbnail #1: Break down the painting into all of its basic shapes.
  • Thumbnail #2: Analyze the arrangement of value in the painting. "Assign" each shape a value, from 0 to 8. Make sure EVERY part of the painting is assigned some value.
STEP 3: Upload your value scale plus your thumbnails into the column with your name on it, along with images of the painting you looked at.

Also, rather than simply divide your page in half (in which case your borders are pre-determined for you), consciously establish your own borders in the middle of the page so that you deliberately choose the dimensions based on what you see in the painting; you can then change and adjust them if need be. 
In terms of thumbnail #2 in which you distribute value, note that the glass and the background are almost identical in value. Sometimes the outline of something disappears, in which case you don't need to include it.  
So again, slow down and try to be patient. Look around to your peers for ideas. You're off to a good start!

A few comments: try to lighten your touch when you do your value scale next time, and fill in the entire space with small, gentle, circular movements with your pencil. Don't press too hard -- you can think of it as a sort of meditation. Your second thumbnail should be filled with value -- there should be some value everywhere in the sketch, just as in the painting, and your value scale can guide you as you assign each shape its value. In painting #2 for example, she is very light compared to her very dark background. Look around at other students' work for ideas. Nice value scale too in general, though the value should extend all the way to the edge of the square (as I mention in the next module's instructions). My one suggestion is that with the "Draughtsman" painting for example, that you really put the value down accurately. You've seen the dark accents, but the rest is quite light in your sketch. But when I squint at the painting in relation to your value scale, I see for example that the entire background is about a 4-5 value, and his hat is a 7 or so. This will push them just a little bit further. Nice value scale too; your 6 & 7 values are too similar so you could probably use another value in between steps 1-2 or 2-3. Two suggestions: Try next time to draw a little bit lighter, with less pressure on your drawing tool (I'm not sure if you're drawing in pencil or ballpoint pen?). Leave your lines a little more open rather than closed, so you feel free to change if you want to. Also, as I mention in the next module's instructions, draw the borders of your thumbnail freehand in the middle of your page (i.e don't use the paper edge as one of your borders) so you can change them as needed). My only suggestion is to be diligent about distributing value throughout the entire second thumbnail -- so every aspect has some value. (Perhaps only the white of her sleeve and the white of the flowers in image #2 will really be the white of your paper; every other spot on the sketch should have some value.) So you're off to a really good start with your second thumbnails but they could be pushed just a bit further. Really try to squint and be diligent when you decide what value something has. In the still life, the only "white" (0 or 1 value) are the eggs, so everything else is pretty dark by comparison. Likewise with the second painting -- do you see how her dress is like one big white shape which means that the doorway behind the figures is really like a 3, 4, or even 5 value? That's what helps bring the figures forward. Nice work!

Great value scale. My main comment is to push the values just a little farther so they're distributed everywhere... in the still life for example, the table isn't white, it's more like a 3 value. The white cups and the highlights on the fruit are really the only whites, so everything else must have some value by contrast.
