90% of all species died out during the Ordovician period that lasted 45 million years 
Most animals went extinct because of a ice age that occurred in the southern hemisphere which caused all of the world to cool down. The fauna emerged during the end of the Ordovician period and was dominated by the  predators.

The permian-triassic extinction happened because of acid rain and volcanic ash from volcanic eruptions. The animals that survived were the therapsids and the archosaurs. When the extinction ended the therapsids dominated as the predators.
