It is now known as ASD Level 1 without language or intellectual impairment, though many will always refer to this condition as Asperger's Syndrome. It is not only a well known term, it is also known in historical literature. The name Asperger belonged to a German researcher named Hans Asperger who published a paper in 1944 in which he called children with autism "little professors". He disagreed wholeheartedly with Leo Conner who, 1943, asserted that autism was extremely rare and that it was likely caused by cold an emotionally detached parenting practices which he termed "refrigerator parenting". Asperger, to the contrary, believed that autism encompassed a wide spectrum of disabilities and was not rare at all. He also believed the disorder to be genetic in origin.
Wakefield was an author who documented that autism was caused by vaccinations. This was found to be deliberately misleading and cost Wakefield his license to practice medicine.
In the year 1990 a movie was released called "Rain Man". The movie depicted two brothers, one of whom was autistic. The portrayal by Dustin Hoffman was the first most people had ever seen of autism.
