As details of the trial and the men's suspected innocence started to spread, the trial became the center of one of the largest causes celebres in modern history. Many famous writers, artists, and academic scholars pleaded for their pardon, or a new trial. After the long waited trial, Sacco and Vanzetti were sentenced to death by the electric chair.
