This is the first film that I made in my Aice Media Studies Class. Our film was a short story about a new student who got bullied and the bullies friend takes the victims side. Throughout the film the bully (Me) I bullied the new kid (Julian). My friend (Kevin) was disagreeing with the fact that I was bullying the new kid because he was nice.

In our first film there were a lot of ups and downs. It took to much time to create clips but out of the the long clips we got little good footage. Our film all around was very short. There were few good things about our film. The plot was interesting.

Film Remake and Reflection

This film was a remake of another group in our class with our own twist. We had to include 10 different types of shots to achieve the end goal. For our 10 shots we used over the shoulder shot, zoom in, close up, long shot, wide shot, long shot, pan left and right, low angle shot, high angle shot, and track out. The original plot of the film we remade was a girl who went to NY with her dog and ends up getting lost and cant find her dog after she falls in love with a guy she met. She asks him to help her find the dog and they end up back at his place where the dog is found because the boyfriend stole the dog. Our group made a twist to the story where an older brother and younger brother go to NY and the older brother finds a girl who kidnap's the younger brother and they look for him and cant find him and go to her place where the younger brother is found. I played the younger brother in this film and it was my first experience with such a role.

Genre and Representation reflection

last week in class we studied the conventions, codes, and audience expectations of multiple different genres. The genres we covered were romance, horror, drama, biopics, thrillers, B movies, comedies, animations, musicals, independent film, superhero, sports, family, film noir, mysteries, historical, western war, adventure, sci-fi, young adult, crime, fantasy, documentaries, and Shakespeare. From each genre we watched a movie clip from 3 different time periods to get a better understanding of the genre itself. Some of the film clips we watched fell under the hybrid genre. Hybrid is a mix of two or more genres in a singular film. This can make a film a lot more interesting to watch.

The genre for our first film was a drama, and for the second film, it was a drama and adventure. In our first film we conformed to the rules for making a film however we did break the audience expectation rule for this film as it was not long enough which made the story more confusing. In our second film I would say we stuck to the rules and executed the film well.

My personal favorite genre is a comedy action. I propose that me and my group could make a film about a man lost in the jungle and has the power to talk to animals to guide him on his way. I would try to add as many codes and conventions as I know to improve the plot of the film.

Editing and Sound Mid-year Film

In November and December of 2022 I learned about editing, sound, and screenwriting/screenplay format. I studied film editing concepts and created documents featuring 20 plus kinds of editing techniques. I watched a documentary on film editing ("The Cutting Edge") and a video on use of color. I studied sound basics and watched a documentary on cinema sound ("Making Waves"). I also read the screenplay for "The Incredibles," learned how to format screenplays using special software, and wrote a two minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare as the basis for my midterm film project.

I had to create a one to two minutes horror or horror hybrid, an "opening" rather than a finished film product, minimal dialogue (mostly music, sound effects/ambience) no wall-to-wall music, no long takes, start in black with company ident and or logo and title, credits before straight cut or dissolve to first image, minimum of three crosscuts between actor and nightmare. The film must also include one close up, one dutch angle, one high or low angle, one low key light set up or one silhouette, one pan or tilt or track/push or spinaround, one zoom or dolly zoom, one subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut, one match cut, one J cut or L cut, one use of slow or fast motion, one intentional use of color for story/emotion, one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shapes, etc.) three sound effects, one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. For Extra credit to include quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shot, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, intentional break of the fourth wall, intentional break of the rule of thirds, rack focus or pull focus shot, intentional use of handheld camera work, use of color filters to create a dream like quality, fisheye lens or fisheye effect, company logo with high quality graphic.
To adhere to the horror conventions, I added a German solider as the killer who threw the grenade. To adhere to the horror codes, I included high pitch sound effects in the middle of the movie. To adhere to the audience expectations, the audience may have felt frightened and tense when the grenade was thrown. I represented a solider with PTSD who was the main character, and the one having the dream. I represented a German solider who was the one who threw the grenade.
In this film, I was successful in the character representation and the telling of the story line. I was less successful in the lighting that was used in my scenes. I also did not manage my time well, which showed in the end result of my video. I used Arc Studios to write my script, and I filmed my video on my phone. To edit, I used Cap Cut, and added sound effects when the grenade was hit, for gunshots, and the explosions. There was a learning curve to this project in the way that it was time consuming, and you had to put aside a lot of time to complete each step.

Two minute film opening analysis

In the first two minutes of the film, Room, we see the two main characters and their life in a single room basement. The genre of this film is a thriller/drama and the target audience would be people either age 18-32. In the opening two minutes there are a lot of jump cuts back and forth showing different things that the mother and boy do. The very first scene you could hear the little boy brushing his teeth and later you could hear a tv playing a show. the rest of the time they are just talking with music playing in the background. I felt confused at the end of the two minutes and also had many questions as to why and how they are in such a room. There wasn't necessarily anything missing. Almost every cut was a jump cut and they were short clips. This 2 minutes accurately followed the conventions and left viewers wondering what's next, they did although not give to big of a cliff hanger. This part of the movie shows issues such as human trafficking and abduction. Other thoughts and questions that I have about this movie mainly revolve around how and why this movie was made, and is it based on a true story?

Getting all the sound you want with the microphone may be incredibly difficult, we as we learned while producing our movie. When the cinematographer had to move behind our actor, the filming was shaky, making it challenging to follow along. The clips did not come out as we hope because of the outside lighting. This film needs to be reshot, based on the comments we've had, because it's hard to understand what we were trying to do. The transitions need to be more seamless and we need additional time at the beginning and finish of our tape for our group editor to succeed with the fresh footage. In the near future, my team will refilm in hopes of realizing our initial objectives. A portion of the dialogue has to be modified, we also arrive to this conclusion. It was hard to hear the performances over the background commotion in the gas station.
