When my mom was in school she most remembers using an overhead projector and the card catalog in the library. she said she remembers how her and her friends would spend hours trying to find the information they needed for projects.

She explained that it’s amazing how now she could probably if she did those same assignments now the time she would need would be cut into tenths.

She also remembers the overhead projector being the most fun days in school because they weren’t super common and you knew it was going to be a fun day when the projector was out.

Before expo markers and fancy calculators there was chalk and basic calculators…

My mom said that most of her school life consisted on her using chalk boards and calculators. She made sure to explain to me that these calculators didn’t have fancy buttons or back spaces. They knew how to add, divide, multiply and that was it. She remembered being in school and adding so many things and having to start over because she typed in one wrong number.

She talked about how it truly taught her patience.

My sister explained how her favorite thing was computers. They still weren’t super popular but they had some for doing research and writing assignments. She told me how it was an absolute game changer because it cut all of her projects down so much. She said that the computers made learning so much more fun because of the games they got to play and it helped them gain so much more information.

This was the start of my experience in technology and helped me be so advanced today,

VHS what?

Something she used a lot in school was a box television and a VHS machine. She explained that all the videos they needed to watch would have to be through this contraption. She said this was basically their Netflix and it was always so much fun compared to regular school.

This helped change the way they learned and helped them get a different perspective from someone other than their teacher.

Smart boards v White Boards

My brother was in the generation that switched from white boards to smart boards and he said this changed the way he learned in a very impactful way. He said was always a trouble maker and couldn’t pay attention because everything was always too boring. He explained that when his class first got the smart board it really helped him be interested and engaged.

He said it was interactive and kept his attention by helping the teach be able to put things into a more impactful way.

Covid meets zoom

My brother said one of the biggest things that impacted him during his school career was virtual learning during Covid. This was a time where a social kid got put in a house with his not social family and all he had to relive his want for human contact was zoom. This gave him an outlet to talk to his friend and interact with his teachers when we were locked down from the world.

This piece of technology helped a 14 year old boy stay sane in a time of craziness and unknown circumstances.
