https://padlet.com/skukant/zr0uuzy39kdr3c30 en-us 2023-10-11 17:06:07 UTC 2023-10-12 01:17:14 UTC hello@padlet.com skukant https://padlet.com/skukant/zr0uuzy39kdr3c30/wish/2742432847 Rebecca Burgess is an autistic comic artist and illustrator.  Being autistic, she incorporates more autistic characters into her comics and stories.  Through her comic strips, she talks about and informs her audience about autism.  She wants to bring more awareness to the disability.  All of her comic strips are about inclusion weather it is about autism, race, disabilities, etc.  Through her comics she teaches her audience about autism, the characteristics, and how to embrace the disability.  I feel that this piece of her comic strip represents the Social Adapted Model.  The comic artist shows that even with all the societal expectations, it is important to accpet yourselves.  She is able to show that acceptance is important for her phsycial and mental heath.  She shows that people with a disability should be an advocate for themselves.  She shows how the social and environmental constructs makes the person with a disability feel like they have to conform.  With more awareness and social change, the comic artist explains how autistic people can fully function in a society that embraces them.

Riva was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, a condition that affects the spinal chord. This disability is usually seen at birth. This piece is a self portrait of the illustrator. The x-ray is of her spine that is hanging from a clothesline. The feathers are falling around the x-ray and body. In the painting, Riva is hidden behind the x-ray, and the only thing that is visible is her stance with her arms crossed. This is eluding to her comforting herself. This represents the Social Adapted Model. Riva is able to portray that her disability is a part of her; however, it is not herself as a whole. She embraces her disability by showing her body love (in the hug). Her disability can be seen by society, but with societal change, she can completely participate in normal life activities.

John Bramblitt is a blind painter who creates amazing artwork.  He was diagnosed with blindness as an adult.  In the video, John describes how making art was something that he did prior to his blindness. He was worried that he would not be able to do it again.  His peers made him believe that he could get back into art.  He did not believe that he could do his artwork alone, and made it clear that he needed support from his peers to get through every challenge in his life.  The video portrays the medical model.  He focused on his feelings of feeling less than, and inferior to his peers.  He viewed himself as different.  He continued to feel this way about himself until others gave him the confidence in himself.
