So many people died at the Treblinka concentration camp the dirt was grey with ashes and had fragments of human bone.

Certain prisoners had to clean out the gas chambers and relied on new prisoners being brought in to survive.

On the trains to concentration camps, it was so cramped that people died of suffocation before ever even seeing the camps.

Nazis said that the gas chambers were medical and sanitizations rooms to decrease panic. They even dressed up as doctors, to further the act of them being sanitary and medical rooms, but they were just marking prisoners who had gold teeth and anything else valuable.

People tend to refer to all Nazi incarceration sites as concentration camps, when there was in fact multiple types of camps. There was more than 44,000 camps, with many different purposes. Here are five examples.

Concentration camps: for the detention of citizens seen as threats to the Reich.

Forced-labor camps: in order to counter labor shortages they exploited prisoners for economic gain.

Transit camps: temporary holding centers for prisoners, usually before being sent to a killing center.

Prisoner-of-war camps: for allied prisoners of war.

Killing centers: primarily for assembly-line style murder of large numbers of people upon arrival.

When all perceived enemies of the Reich were sent to concentration camps, showing any disagreement or resistance was dangerous whether you were Jewish or not.

Auschwitz guard, Oskar Groening recalled his experience after working at the camp stating, "You can imagine that down the years I have heard the cries of the dead in my dreams and in every waking moment. I will never be free of them.
I have never been back there because of my shame. This guilt will never leave me. I can only plead for forgiveness and pray for atonement."(The Age.com)

This has been passed down through generations.

Their latest results reveal that descendants of people who survived the Holocaust have different stress hormone profiles than their peers, perhaps predisposing them to anxiety disorders.

Scientists have found that the conditions in camps can affect future generations health.

"Yehuda's team at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx, N.Y., and others had previously established that survivors of the Holocaust have altered levels of circulating stress hormones compared with other Jewish adults of the same age. Survivors have lower levels of cortisol, a hormone that helps the body return to normal after trauma; those who suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have even lower levels."(Tori Rodriguez, Scientific American)
