Educational innovation is essential for teachers to adapt to changing contexts and student needs. While daily challenges make it difficult to apply new tools, creativity techniques offer valuable opportunities. This course provides practical strategies to develop creativity and innovation skills, helping educators design engaging, flexible, and effective learning experiences.

Creativity and innovation are not always about creating something entirely new; sometimes success lies in improving or valuing what already works. Yet, in education, innovation becomes essential to engage students, achieve learning goals more effectively, and enrich the teaching–learning experience.

A static, traditional approach often overlooks two key elements: students and creativity. Understanding learners as active partners in the process is fundamental, while fostering creativity equips them to face an unpredictable future where many professions do not yet exist. In a rapidly changing world, educational innovation is not optional—it is a continuous responsibility.

Creativity is often confused with other concepts. It is not just originality or simply doing something different; it is not eccentricity, since true creativity must bring value and usefulness.

It is also not:

A measurable diagnosis: no universal test can determine creativity.

Quick wit or random ideas: generating associations can help, but it is not enough.

Artistic or manual skills: drawing, writing, or crafting do not automatically mean being creative.

Restlessness or hyperactivity: while such traits may produce ideas, creativity requires discipline and broader skills.

creativity is not about being different for its own sake, but about generating valuable and useful solutions.

Creativity is a complex human behavior shaped by evolutionary, social, and educational experiences, and it manifests differently across fields of knowledge. There is no single, precise definition; instead, it can be understood through four complementary dimensions: the person (author), the product, the process, and the social-cultural context.

Creativity is not only about talent or spontaneous ideas—it is the result of an attitude, a set of skills, and the use of methods and techniques. Its value is ultimately determined by society or experts, such as teachers in the classroom.

As Mihály Csíkszentmihályi defined it, creativity is a state of consciousness that enables building mental connections to identify, frame, and solve problems in relevant and divergent ways.

Creativity combines skills, processes, and social validation, making it one of the most dynamic and multifaceted aspects of human activity.

Innovation is the implementation of original ideas that generate value—social or economic—in a sustainable way. Key characteristics include:

Action and process: Innovation requires doing things, not just planning or thinking. It involves significant changes or modifications.

Impact and application: The change must be introduced and applied in a sector, improving results and creating measurable benefits.

Sustainability: True innovation is long-lasting, not just a temporary improvement.

Distinct from improvement: Unlike incremental improvement, which is predictable and conservative, innovation introduces real change, adds differentiated value, and involves risk, as outcomes are not known in advance.

Innovation goes beyond simple enhancement—it transforms products, services, processes, or organizational methods to create meaningful, lasting impact.
