Middle English period: The Hundred Years' War (1337-1453)

Event: The Hundred Years' War was a series of conflicts between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France, lasting intermittently for over a century. It began when King Edward III of England asserted his claim to the French throne. The war saw numerous battles and campaigns fought across France and England.

Role of the English Language: The Hundred Years' War had several linguistic implications for English. During this period, there was a resurgence of English national identity and pride, particularly fueled by victories such as those of Henry V at Agincourt. This sense of national identity helped solidify English as the language of the people, contrasting with the French used by the aristocracy and the court. Furthermore, the war contributed to the expansion of the English vocabulary as soldiers encountered new military tactics, weapons, and cultural influences from France. This period of conflict played a role in shaping the English language and reinforcing its status as the vernacular of the English people.

Middle English period: The Black Death (1347-1351)

Event: The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It originated in Central Asia and spread rapidly along trade routes, reaching Europe in 1347. The plague ravaged Europe, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 25 to 30 million people, wiping out a significant portion of the population.

Role of the English Language: The Black Death had profound social, economic, and linguistic impacts on medieval England. The massive loss of life led to labor shortages, which, in turn, contributed to the collapse of the feudal system and the emergence of a more mobile labor force. As a result, there was increased social mobility, with peasants demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Linguistically, the Black Death may have accelerated the decline of Anglo-Norman influence in English society, as the devastation of the pandemic affected the aristocracy disproportionately. Furthermore, the demographic shifts resulting from the plague may have contributed to the spread of English as the dominant vernacular, as it was spoken by the majority of the population.
