Teaching was not my first choice. Once I started taking courses that related more to teaching I began to like the idea of becoming a teacher. It wasn't until I got to observe classrooms and work as a teacher's aide that I knew I made the right choice. Working with students has helped me realize that I enjoy helping them and teaching them. I think it is rewarding to see how much you have impacted/helped them. It warms my heart when they run up to you to give a hug or say hi and talk.

As a student, I think that direct correction is beneficial for second language learners. From what I gathered from this week's key concepts, direct correction is an effective tool in improving students’ accuracy in writing.

My Thoughts:
After learning about the Critical Age Hypothesis I would say I agree with the arguments of this hypothesis. The aspect that I agree the most with is that the first few years of life are crucial for language learning. I remember by high school French teacher sharing that it is easier to learn a language when you are a toddler. I also remember hearing that parents speak to the infants in multiple languages so that the child is better prepared when they are able to speak. To support this hypothesis, I learned from a previous course that infants and toddlers have more brain connections than teenagers and adults do. These connections are what help toddlers learn a language most easily and quickly than an adult.

As a learner, I think the strategies that are most effective are the cognitive strategies. An example of this strategy is when I prepare for an exam. I internally store the information that I will later recall. Students are all unique and learn in different ways. Without knowing, I think students figure out what strategies work best for them even though they may not be aware of the existence of the strategy. As a future teacher, I would like to give my students more options to different strategies, even strategies they are not comfortable with. As the student develops and grows, they might end up liking and using a strategy they once were not comfortable using.

Students should be encouraged to take risks because it promotes educational growth. One way teachers can do this is by modeling risk taking and/or sharing experiences or stories of risk taking. Another way to encourage risk taking could be by giving a mini lesson on it and doing a fun activity where students can practice risk taking. I have found myself finding that I am not learning or grasping the material. I think it makes it harder when you have peer pressure to do better and you aren't able to. I would like to help my students understand that mistake making and struggling to learn are not bad. I think if students are taught this at an early age and from all of their teachers, they will learn to accept mistakes as a part of learning.
