Furthermore, once we had covered everything we needed to know about paper, we moved on to the printing process. This was where Pixel Tech came in. They are a company that specialised in all forms of printing methods. We were walked thought the different kinds of printing process, such as creating Embossed designs all the way to die cutting. Following this, we were introduced to the two major colour spectrums, CMYK and RGB. In most cases, CMYK is used for offset printing, which is a high-end print method that can mass produce high quality prints. Likewise, we also talked about the types of paper and how they impact the print. To wrap it up we where given a small booklet that contained examples of a variety of different print qualities created through different printing methods. 

For our third and final talk of the day, we delved into the design thinking and mindset used by ICE WORKS, which was a design company. We learnt about the thinking processes that goes into designing a packaging and the factors that must be considered, like its overall structure. This talk mainly revolved around the practical side of designing. Things such as durability and production cost are a major real-life consideration when designing a product. Finally, to close, we went through how to patent our deigns, and had a basic run down on how patents work. This was especially popular among the whole class.

From the sharing session. I have learnt more about the different type of materials that can be used for packaging. It gives the packaging as different type of look as some materials reflect light, are glittery or even matt. This can be used in conjunction with the theme of the product be it playful or authentic.  we also learnt about factors that would affect the packaging one of which is the structure of the packaging. It has to be strong enough to hold its shape, be functional and practical. 
 
 We were also taught more about different types of paper and how the GSM affects the paper. At the same time we were recommended to buy paper that are FSC approved as it is more environmentally friendly as they control the number of trees that are cut down and plant more trees so that the number of trees will not decline.
 
 For project wise, PIXEL TECH taught us more about the color settings for paper printing 

 

 

During and from the sharing sessions with the three big companies, I had learn about a lot of “paper-critical” things.For the Fancy Paper’s sharing session, I had learnt about the importance of choose the right choice of paper for the right choice of work, for example, some paper, such as the UV treated paper is more suitable to be used for frontal cover page or for the most important part of the report, or if possible, the most durable part. I had learnt about the actual usage of the different GSM – Grams per Square Meter- the higher the GSM, the thicker the paper will be , and thus the heavier it will be , of course, for personal usage, it also means that it will be more expensive, but durable .Additionally we had also learnt about the existence of FSC, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council, which is a non-profit organization aims towards producing paper without harming the forest, but to be honest, for us consumers, especially students, I don’t think we’d really cared so much about the trees. 

 

For the sharing session with Pixel Tech, where we were taught the important aspect about the offset of papers, as well as the quality of papers.First of all, just like the sharing session with Fancy Paper, the better the quality of the papers , the more expensive it will be, since the process of making it “expensive” is well, expensive. Secondly, we were taught the usage of CMYK printing: instead of the classic RGB , CMYK, printing colors will be more vibrant, and have a better depth of field . 

 

Last but not least, during the sharing session with the peoples from Icework Design , we were lectured about the importance of package design, where simple wrappings could drastically (and dramatically) increase the value of the product. Example being the diamond shaped perfume(I suppose) box as well as little black box which when opened ,reveals to be a toolbox-of-design with build in brush holder. The teacher in charge of the talk taught us that the most important way of attracting customer is via the combination of the right choice of color, materials and even the hidden messages that’s being conveyed

To support their bright fruit flavors, the company use bright, kid-friendly packaging. A sour-faced  gummy candy brings the message home: this candy tastes sour.

The use of clear packaging gives the customer a better idea of what’s inside. It also lets potential customers evaluate the color, size and other aspects of gummy bears 

Established in 2005, despite being one of the late comers in term of local café store, Toast box was soon made famous among locals and foreigners alike thanks to its sales of coffees that were the favorites from the 50s to the 60s, attracting patrons from both old and young with its special Nanyang flavor. Additionally each café joint’s exterior design were constructed based on the different time period of Singapore . The store not only sell coffee and tea- it also sell local delights such as laksa and curry chicken

The Coffee Beans & Tea Left. The store was originally based in America before having one of its branch moved to Singapore. Aiming to get the best coffee as well as tea, the fonder, Mr Herbert B. Hyman has somehow become the region’s father in gourmet coffee. The store wishes the customers to have the perfect flavor, and thus, the taste of the beverages that’s available has been changed and improved over time to become better and better. With over 22 different types of coffee and 20 type of tea, it is indeed a Competitor to Toast box

Starbuck. It was formed in 1971 as a small coffee roaster store in Seattle, which has been evolved into a multi-national company that is famous around the world. Believing in serving the best and the ones with the highest standards of quality, Starbuck utilizes the best and the highest quality of coffee, harvested with an ethical sourcing partices, straight from Latin America , Africa and Asia, where they would be roasted to the optimum environment, which was know as the starbuck roast. With a global market, it would seems that Starbuck would be a strong competitor to the South East Asian Toast Box    

Dapper Coffee

Located at 73 Amoy Street, this Café offers its fine food with the atmosphere of the 50s.With the fine coffee beans that were harvested from the Virgin Mountains of Papua New Guinea, and the cherries being handpicked by small farm owners, the food this café provided is really one of a kind.

Further more, this café is rather environment friendly as it uses steel straws and cloth coasters to cut down on the usage of plastic. Both the Toast Box and the Dapper Coffee uses the vintage 50s to 60s’ atmosphere in their café and taste, thus, I believe that Dapper Coffee would pose as a strong rival to the well known local Café

Among all the other competitor brands, Starbucks reserve their right as an iconic millennial brand. They garnered their reputation through the way they present themselves and their products. As shown below, they make use of creative yet easy-to-understand illustrations to make their packaging stand out. Paired up with their world-renowned logo and color scheme, Starbucks is able to create packaging that caters to the interests of many youths and adults likewise. 

This sharing session was impactful as they shared more practical information that will definitely benefits us in the future as a designer.

Ice Cream and Cookie co is a leading ice cream and gelato supplier in Singapore. They produces authentic ice cream pints that can be found in places like cold storage, ice cream cakes to their unique cookie ice cream “sandwich”.

As Ice cream and Cooke co is founded in 2013, their products are meant to focus towards the younger audiences. This can be seen by their products are usually innovative and unique while having the “Premium” and “Up-Trend” look using colours like gold and many others.

Haagen-Dazs is an American ice cream brand established in 1961. Haagen-Dazs has always been famous for producing premium ice cream for a high price. The company’s brand as of current, is link more towards luxury which can be seen by them swapping generic tubs or pint with more uniquely designed tubs.

Being around for the longest time, local coffee shops holds a memorable place deep within Singapore’s culture and heritage. Unfortunately, such businesses have no choice but to find a way to survive in the rapidly growing market and competition. In order to do so, a smaller budget is used. This is reflective in their packaging, which consists of only a plastic bag and string. However, it is effective and efficient whilst possessing a sense of nostalgia for any regulars.
