"We're almost as close as brothers; when you grow up in a tight-knit neighborhood like ours you get to know each other real well. If I had thought about it, I could have called Darry and he would have come by on his way home and picked me up, or Two-Bit Mathews" (Chapter 1, pg 4

The final example of the theme of friendship being shown in chapter 8 page 107 when Ponyboy and two-bit go to visit Dally. Dally asks how Johnny is and when Two-Bit tells him he isn't doing well Dally starts to worry. Dally is described as the cold sort of person who doesn't really care about anyone or anything but when its shown in this chapter he is seen to be worried about Johnny. That shows the theme of friendship because Dally being the person who wouldn't care about anyone or anything no one would expect that from him. That shows how important friends can be to people.

No matter what the situation might be, all the greasers are there for each other and show each others loyalty in different ways. An example would be Dally always having the greasers back even when it could be risking his life.
